1Apnea
Respiration cease for several seconds. Persistent cessation results in respiratory arrest.
2Expiration
A passive process that depends on the elastic recoil properties of the lungs, requring little or no muslce work. Breathing out.
3Hypoventilation
Respiratory rate is abnormally low, and depth of ventilation is depressed. Hypercarbia sometimes occurs.
4Hypoxia
Inadequate tissue oxygenation at the cellular level. Results from deficiency in oxygen delivery or oxygen use at the cellular level.
5Incentive Spirometry
Encourages volunatry deep breathing by providing visual feedback to patients about inspiratory volume.
6Inspiration
An active process, stimulated by chemoreceptors, which monitor pH, PaCO2, and PaO2 in the blood. Inhalation
7Orthopnea
An abnormal condition in which a patient uses multiple pillow when reclining to breath easier or sit leaningnforward with arms elevated.
8Abrasion
Scraping or rubbing away of epidermis that results in localized bleeding and later weeping of serous fluid.
9Blanching
When the normal red tones of the light skinned pateints are absent.
10Debridement
The removal of nonviable, necrotic tissue
11Dehiscence
The partial or total separation of wound layers.
12Eschar
Black, brown, tan, or necrotic tissue
13Exudate
Fluid that leaks out of blood vessels into nearby tissues.
14Induration
The act of hardening
15Laceration
A cut/ thought of as a wound caused by sharp objects, like a shard of glass
16Medical Asepsis
Reduces the number of transmission of disease-cauing microorganisms after they leave the body, but doesn't necessarily eliminate them. For example: hand hygience, use of PPE, and routine environmental cleaning
17Puncture
Usually a small, circular wound with edges coming together toward the center.
18Pressure Injuries
Localized damage to the skin and underlying soft tissue, usually over a bony promience or related to a medical device or other device. It develops as a result of prolonged ischemica in tissues aggravated by superficial shear or friction.
19Purulent Exudate
A thick and opaque exudate that is tan, yellow, green, or brown in color. Often associated with infection of high bacteria levels.
20Serous
Clear, like plasma
21Slough
Soft yellow or white tissue. Stringy substancceattached to wound bed, and it must eventually be removed by a qualified health care provider or by means of an appropriate wound dressing before the wound is able to heal.
22Surgical Asepsis
Prevents contamination of an open wound, serves to isolate an operative or procedural area frojman unsterile environment, and maintains a sterile field for surgery or procedural intervention.
23Tissue Ischemia
Lack of oxygenated blood flow to areas of the body
24Wound
A disruption of the integrity and function of tissues in the body. May result from trauma to the skin causing laceration or puncture or from surgical intervention.
