1What are all of the non specific resistances in order?
1. Skin, mucous membrane
2. phagocytic and non phagpocytic cells
3. inflammation
4. anti microbial proteins
5. fever
2In the first line of defense of non specific resistance what are the functions of the skin and mucous membrane?
Skin - Keratin = strong barrier
- acidic skin secretions
Mucouse membrane - acidic GI pH=1 Vagina pH=5
- nasal hairs
- saliva and tears
3In the second line of defense of non specific resistance we have phagocytic and non phagocytic cells what is there roll?
Phagocytic = microbe adheres and is broken down
non phagocytic (natural killer cells)= kills damaged cells and foreign invaders by punching a whole in membrane w/ perforins
4What chemicals are released during inflammation and what do they result in?
Chemical = Histamines, kinins, prostaglandins, cytokinases
Result = dilation of blood vessels leading to swelling and pain due to pressure on nerve centers
5What are the 2 anti microbial proteins?
Comoplement and interferons
6What is the compliment antimiucrobial protein?
Group of 20 plasma
Activated by binding of antibody to antigen
Complenments/enhances immune response
7What is the function f the interferon proteins?
Protein secreted by viral infected cells
Stims other cells to produce chemicals to interfere with virus reproduction
8What does it mean when someone gets a fever?
What are some results of that fever?
Meaning = infection no longer localized (systemic)
Results = production of pyrogen
- increases body temp
- liver spleen withhold iron & zinc to interrupt bacterial growth
- increases metabolism leading to increased repair
9What is an antigen?
What are the 3 Antigen?
Deffinition = Any foreign material that activate the immune system
Types = Complete antigen, Hapten, Self antigen
10What is a complete antigen?
Contains:
1. Immungenecity = ability to stim specific lymphocyte and antibody prod
2. reactivity = ability to react w/ lymphocytes and antigens
11What is a hapten?
incomplete antigen
does not stim immune until linked with a protein
body wil attacks if linked ( seen as foreign)
Think of a developed allergy over time
12What is the Self antigen?
MHC proteins found on surface of all cells
Coded by our genes
Think about the complications during blood transfusion
13What does MHC proteins stand for?
Major Histocompatibility Complex
