1Disease Classification
Pseudomonas infection- wound infection
2Causative Agent
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
3Get to know the Causative Agent
GNR, Facultative aerobe, flagella motility and pilus attachment, antibiotic resistance, biofilms
4Epidemiology: Reservoir
Ubiquitous- animals and their enviroments
5Epidemiology: POE
Compromised tissues
6Epidemiology: MOT
Indirect, direct transmissions; nosocomial infections
7Incubation Period
Variable (hours to days)
8Pathogenesis
Attachement to and colonization of surfaces using flagella and pilli. Secretion of effector protiens (Virulence factors) disrupts tissues and cells. Exotoxin A inhibits translation, proteases digest tissues and inhibit clot formation, and phospholipase digests cell membrane. The toxin pyocyanine produces a greenish color to site of infection
9Symptoms
Skin lesions with green pus, chills, fever, vary based on location (folliculitis, green nail syndrome, keratitis, UTI, pneumonia, etc)
10Complications
Spread of infection to other organs, bacteremia, sepsis, necrotizing lesions, mortality for bacteremia 12-60%
11Treatment
Antiboitics- multidrug, resistant variants
12Prevention
Disinfection of surfaces and equipment, proper aseptic technique, proper wound care and removal of dead tissue
