1
What is wave motion
Wave motion is a periodic motion that involves the transfer of energy from one point of the medium to another point of the medium without actual transport of matter between 2 points
2
What are the 2 types of waves?
Transverse and Longitudinal
3
What is the hand motion and direction of waves for transverse waves?
Up and down
4
What is the hand motion and direction of waves for longitudinal waves?
Side to Side
5
What direction do transverse waves travel in
The direction that is perpendicular to the direction of vibration of the particles
6
What direction do longitudinal waves travel in
The direction that is parallel to the direction of vibration of the particles
7
What are some examples of transverse waves
Radio waves, visible light, X-rays and ultraviolet
8
What are some examples of longitudinal waves
Sound waves, slinky spring vibrates in the same direction as the spring
9
What’s the difference between a displacement-distance graph and a displacement-time graph
displacement-distance graphs show the displacement of all particles at a particular point in time displacement-time graphs show the displacement of one particle over a time interval
10
What is Amplitude and it’s symbol
Amplitude, A is the maximum displacement of a point from its rest position
11
What is a wavelength, it’s symbol and SI unit
Wavelength, λis the shortest distance between any 2 points in phase such as between 2 successive crests or troughs in a transverse wave. SI unit is metres
12
What is a period, it’s symbol and SI unit
Period, T is the time taken to produce one complete wave. Si unit is seconds
13
What is frequency, it’s symbol and SI unit
Frequency, f is the number of complete waves produced in 1 second. Si unit is Hertz (Hz )
14
What are the 2 formulas for finding frequency
1 divided by the period and wave speed divided by wavelength
15
What is wave speed, it’s symbol and SI unit
Wave speed, v is the distance travelled by a wave per second. Si unit is m/s
16
What are the 2 formulas to find wave speed
wavelength divided by period or frequency multiplied by wavelength
17
What’s the formula for wavelength
wave speed divided by frequency
18
What is a wavefront
It is an imaginary line on a wave that joins all adjacent points that are in phase.
19
When waves are reflected from a surface, what is the angle of reflection?
It is equal to angle of incidence
20
Do the wavelength and frequency of the wave change during reflection
No
21
When can refraction of waves occur
When there is a change in the depth of water (frequency remains the same)
22
What happens when water waves enter a shallow region?
The speed slows down, the wavelength decreases, but the frequency in the 2 regions will not change as frequency is determined by the source like a motor
23
What happens when water waves enter a deeper region?
The speed increases, the wavelength increases, but the frequency in the 2 regions will not change as frequency is determined by the source like a motor
