1What is the definition of crystal?
A regular, repeating arrangement of particles in crystaline solid
2Where are electrostatic forces found?
In Ionic and mettalic structures
3What 2 factors increase the strength of ionic bonds?
A larger the charge
A smaller the ions
4What solvents dissolve ionic structures?
Any polar substance (e.g. water)
5Why do ionic structures dissolve in water?
The water molecules pull ions away from the lattice causing it to dissolve
6Why are ionic compounds brittle?
When bent, ions with like charges are pushed together causing them to repel and shatter the crystal structure
7Why are mettalic bonds malleable?
Layers sliding over eachother do not effect the delocalised electrons, so mettalic bonds remain
8Describe a Covalent bond
A chemical bond where a pair of electrons are shared between 2 atoms
9How are atoms in a covalent bond held together?
By electrostatic attraction between the nucleus of each atom and shared electrons
10What is electronegitivity?
The ability of an atom to attract the pair of electrons in the covalent bond towards itself
11What is a co-ordinate bond?
It is a covalent bond where both electrons in the bond come from just one of the atoms involved
12How are co-ordinate bonds represented?
With an arrow (->)
