1Alkene test?
Add bromine water to it.
If alkene itll turn brown to colourless
2Alcohol test
Add small piece of metallic sodium
If alcohol lots of fizzing occurs
3Carboxylic acid test
Add solid sodium hydrogen carbonate and bubble it through lime water
If carboxylic acid lime water turns cloudy
4Aldehyde test?
Warm it up with Fehling's solution
If aldehyde itll turn blue to brick red colour
5Halogenoalkane test
add NaOH and warm
acidify with nitric acid then add silver nitrate
If halo alkane:
Cl- = white
Br- = cream
I- = yellow
6whats high resolution spectroscopy
Spectrometers that can measure up to 3 or 4 decimal points.
Allows us to work out molecular formulas of parent ions
7How IR spectroscopy works
Bonds in molecules absorb specific frequencies and device detects transmittance of it
Low transmittance at a specific frequency means that molecule has that bond
8How to tell difference between O-H in alcohols and acids
Alcohols - smooth curve and looks like a whale head
Acids - jagged and looks like a mountain range
9What is the fingerprint region in IR
Below 1500 and patterns are unique for every molecule
