1
eukaryotes are..
made up of eukaryotic cells, and are plant or animal cells
2
prokaryotes are...
made up of prokaryotic cells, and e.g are bacterial cells
3
eukaryotic cells have?
cell membrane, cytoplasm and and genetic material enclosed in a nucleus, they are relatively complex and include all plant and animal cells
4
nucleus
contains genetic material that controls the activities of the cell
5
cytoplasm
a gel like substance in which most sub-cellular structures are suspended, most chemical reactions happen here
6
cell membrane
controls movement of substances in and out of the cell
7
mitochondria
the place where aerobic respiration takes place to release energy to the cell
8
ribsomes
where new proteins are made for the cell
9
cell wall
made of cellulose and strengthens the cell
10
chloroplasts
where photosynthesis occurs, contains chlorophyll which absorbs light for photosynthesis
11
permenent vacuole
filled with cell sap, important for keeping plant cell rigid for support
12
whats bigger eukaryotic of prokaryotic?
prokaryotic are much smaller in comparison to eukaryotic
13
differences between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells?
prokaryotic cells have: slime capsules, no nucleus, plasmids, flagella, and a cell wall not made of cellulose
14
single DNA loop
floats in prokaryotic cells in the cytoplasm, controls most cell functions
15
plasmids
code for a few specific cell functions, small rings of dna
16
flagella
long proteins strand that allows the cell to move around like a "tail"
17
whats differentiation?
the process where the cell changes to become specialised for its job
18
why do cells differentiate?
to form different types of cells as an organism develops
19
animal cell differentiation when?
they differentiate at an early stage, then lose the ability once they are specialised
20
mature animals and cell division is?
mainly restricted to repair and replacement
21
plant cell differentiation when?
they retain the ability to differentiate throughout their life
22
what happens when a cell differentiates?
it aquires different sub-cellular structures. this allows the cell to carry out its specific function, thus becoming a specialised cell
23
why are cells specialised?
to allow them to carry out a particular function. it allows them to work individually, or as part of a tissue, organ, or organ system
24
what are sperm cells specialised for?
reproduction. they contain genetic material from the male parent and need to move through water or the female reproductive system to reach the egg
25
sperm cell adaptations:
long tail- swim to egg middle section- many mitochondria to transfer energy acrosome- contains digestive enzymes for breaking down outer layer of egg
26
what are nerve cells specialised for?
rapid communication, they carry electrical signals from one part of the body to another
27
nerve cell adaptations
lots of dendrites- to make connections to other nerve cells and form a network axon- very very long and carries impulses from one place to another
28
what are muscle cells specialised for?
contraction, they are involved in movement of the body
29
muscle cells adaptations
many mitochondria- transfer energy needed for contraction very long- so that they have room to contract
30
what are root hair cells specialised for?
taking up water (by osmosis) and mineral ions (active transport)
31
root hair cells adaptations
root hair- increases surface area large vacuole- speeds up movement of water into cell many mitochondria- energy for active transport
32
what are xylem cells specialised for?
transporting water and mineral ions from the roots to the stems and the leaves
33
xylem cells adaptations
lignin- builds up in spirals around cell walls for strength and support it is a hollow tube- cells joined end to end with no cell walls, and also allows water to move easily
34
what are phloem cells specialised for?
transporting food (sugars) around a plant
35
phloem cell adaptations
tubes are formed by elongated cells joined end to end pores in sieve plates- allows for substances to move between cells up and down the plant
36
examples of animal cell specialisation
muscle cell, nerve cell, sperm cell
37
example of plant cell specialisation
xylem cell, phloem cell, root hair cell
38
similarities between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell
cell membrane, cytoplasm, ribosomes
