1Treadmill Protocols
Bruce, Modified Bruce, Naughton
2Descibe Bruce Protocol
3 min stages with changes in both mph and incline
Large MET increments between stages
Stage 4 - walk to running
Each minute corresponds to a specific MET
3from a bruce protocol we can calculate
VO2 max for adults in good health + cardiac diseases
4Describe the modified bruce protocol
3 minute stages with changes in both mph and incline
smallet MET increments between first four stages
5the modified bruce is better for
older, deconditioned, or chronically ill individuals
6what is the naughton protocol
submax test designed to keep HR below max (80-90% max)
constant mph at 2mph
there are 6, 2 min stages with changes in incine only (3.5% every 2 min) so smaller MET increments between each stage
7Who should/shouldn't use naughton protocol?
older, deconditioned, or unhealthy
pt's with known CAD
NOT for PAD
8Types of Cycle Ergometry Tests
Astrand Test, YMCA, Arm
9What is the astrand test
single stage test lasting 6 min
pedal rate - 50 rpm
workload based on fitness level + sex
10Goal of astrand
maintain HR between 125-170 at 5 and 6 mins
11describe the YMCA protocol
warm up: pedal for 3 min at a resistane of 0 kg and 50 cadence
1st stage: 3 min at 150 kg/m/min
for each stage record HR at 2 and 3 min - if not within 5bpm continue for another min and record hr at 4 min
What we did in ex phys - increase based on HR
12describe arm ergometer test
similar to cycle with lower workload per stage
not standardized
can be ramped or steady state
13Why choose a cycle test
leg/arm fatigue in inexperienced, untrained individuals may stop the test prior to reaching cardiovascular max
VO2 max is usually 10%-15% lower in a cycle test vs treadmill test
14Reasons for GXT Termination
severe angina, SOB, CNS symptoms, drop in SBP >10 mmHg with increase in workload, signs of poor perfusion, claudication, dysrhythmias, SBP >250, DBP>110, technical issues, pt rq to stop
15what is claudication
pain or cramping in legs during physical activity
