1
Describe the general characteristics of Echinoderms:
Pentaradial symmetry, central disk, arms in multiples of 5, oral and aboral surfaces, larvae are bilaterally symmetrical, large coelom is main body cavity.
2
True or false, Echinoderms have metamerism and a head.
False, no head or metamerism
3
What is the endoskeleton of Echinoderms made of?
Dermal ossicles or spicules
4
Describe the dermal ossicles:
Protrudes as spines
5
What is the function of pedicellariae?
Pincer-like structure that helps keep body surface clean, protects papulae and helps in feeding.
6
What are the fine extensions of the coelom that aid in respiration called?
Papulae (gills)
7
What is a madreporite?
A porous screen that lets water in
8
Describe the water vascular system of Echinoderms...
Madriporite connects to stone canal, connects to ring canal, leads to radial canal. 1 per arm.
9
Describe Echinoderm "feet"...
Tube feet used for food gathering and locomotion. Compression of ampulla elongates tube foot. Suckers often at end of tube feet.
10
Describe Echinoderm feeding and digestion
Complete alimentary canal, short esophagus, cardiac stomach often evertable, pyloric stomach connects to pyloric ceca (digestive gland), short intestine leads to anus.
11
Describe pyloric ceca:
Pyloric ceca produce digestive enzymes and are also sites of digestion and absorption.
12
Describe Echinoderm respiration, circulation, and excretion:
Coelomic fluid is circulated by cilia on the cells of the peritoneum. Gas exchange happens across thin walls in tube feet and papulae. Nitrogenous waste can be removed by coelomocytes
13
Describe Echinoderm nervous system:
Nerve ring surrounds the esophagus, radial nerve cords under radial canals of water vascular system in the ambulacral groove
14
Name all the classes under phylum Echinodermata
Crinoidea, Asteroidea, Echinoidea, Ophiuroidea, Holothuroidea
15
Describe Class Crinoidea:
Sea lillies and feather stars, sessile in early part of life, tube feet and mouth faces up, No madreporite, spines or pedicellariae, has central disc called calyx
16
Describe Class Asteroidea:
Sea stars, regenerators, predators to anything they can catch, feed on bivalves with 1k force.
17
Describe Clas Echinoidea:
Sea urchins and sand dollars, no arms, dermal ossicles connected to one large test. Powerful toothed chewing structure called aristotle's lantern for grazing on algae.
18
Describe Class Ophiuroidea:
Brittle stars, Slender arms covered by articulated ossicles, Ambucural grooves covered.
19
Describe Class Holothuroidea:
Sea cucumbers, elongate and soft bodied, spicules, bilaterally symmetrical, Cuvierian tubules, tube feet.
