1
Semiconductor
A material with a resistivity between that of a good conductor and a good insulator.
2
Holes
Positively charged gaps or spaces which are created

when an electron breaks free from a covalent bond
3
Intrinsic Conduction
The movement of charges through a pure semiconductor

with an equal number of electrons and holes
4
Doping
the addition of impurities in a semiconductor

to increase its conductivity
5
Thermistor
A semiconductor whose resistance decreases rapidly with increasing temperature.
6
Light Dependent Resistor
a semiconductor whose conductivity is increased when light shines on it.
7
N-Type Semiconductor
A semiconductor in which electrons are the majority charge carriers
8
P-Type Semiconductor
a semiconductor in which positive holes are the majority charge carriers
9
Extrinsic Conduction
The movement of charges through a doped semiconductor

with an unequal number of electrons and holes
10
P-N Junction
The region connecting a P-type semiconductor to an N-type semiconductor
11
Depletion layer
the region at both sides of a P-N
junction

that contains no free majority charge carriers
12
*Junction Voltage
*The p.d. that exists across a p-n junction

caused by holes and electrons moving across the junction when it was formed

**(Not sure if this is a definition or not)**
13
*Forward biased & reverse biased P-N junctions
*A forward biased p-n junction conducts current.
A reverse biased p-n junction does not conduct current.

**I don't understand what this means**
14
Diode
A device that allows current to flow in one direction only
15
Rectifier
A device that converts A.C. to D.C.
