1aspicit hunc trepidos agitantem in retia cervos
As this man was chasing the frightened deer into his nets
2vocalis nymphe, quae nec reticere loquenti
a talkative nymph noticed him - who has neither learned to keep quiet when someone is talking
3nec prius ipsa loqui didicit, resonabilis Echo.
nor talk until someone has spoken first, the answering Echo.
4corpus adhuc Echo, non vox, erat; et tamen usum
Until now Echo had a body and was not just a voice, and although
5garrula non alium, quam nunc habet, oris habebat,
a chatterbox, she enjoyed no more power of speech than she does now,
6reddere de multis ut verba novissima posset.
namely that she could repeat only the last words of the many she heard.
7ergo ubi Narcissum per devia rura vagantem
Therefore when Narcissus was wandering through the lonely countryside
8vidit et incaluit, sequitur vestigia furtim,
she saw him and fell in love with him, following his footsteps secretly,
9quoque magis sequitur, flamma propiore calescit,
and the more she followed, the more the flame of passion burned within her,
10non aliter quam cum summis circumlita taedis
not unlike when quick-to-ignite sulphur, smeared around on the tops of torches,
11admotas rapiunt vivacia sulphura flammas.
catches fire from flame brought close.
