1Flexion
Movement that bends a joint or brings the bones closer together
Ex: bending the knee/elbow
Takes part in sagittal plane
2Extension
Movement that straightens or opens a joint
Ex: stretching out the knee/elbow
Takes part in sagittal plane
3Medial Rotation
When the joint medially rotates – limb turns toward the midline
Occurs at hip and shoulder joint
4Lateral Rotation
Swings the limb away from the midline – more to lateral side
Occurs at hip and shoulder joint
5Abduction
Moves a limb laterally away from the midline of the body
Ex: open part of a star jump and spreading out fingers or toes
Occurs along frontal plane
6Adduction
Brings a limb medially toward the body’s midline
Ex: close part of star jump and bringing toes and finger closer together
Occurs along frontal plane
7Internal Rotation
Like medial rotation – turning along transverse plane
Ex: rotation of the head and neck to check for cars when crossing the street
8External Rotation
Like lateral rotation – turning along transverse plane
Ex: rotation of the head and neck to check for cars when crossing the street
9Circumduction
Combination of flexion, extension, abduction and adduction = creating cone shape movement
Only possible at shoulder and hip joints
Ex: swimming backstroke
10Horizontal Abduction
Moves a limb laterally away from the midline of the body on the horizontal plane
11Horizontal Adduction
Brings a limb medially toward the body’s midline on the horizontal plane
12Protraction
Occurs when the scapula, clavicle, head and jaw moves anteriorly - forward
13Retraction
Occurs when the scapula, clavicle, head and jaw moves posteriorly - backwards
14Trunk lateral flexion
Movement of the trunk to the left or right which involves movement of the shoulder towards the hip on either side
15Trunk rotation
Rotating the trunk along the transverse plane
16Trunk flexion
Produces forward movement of the spine or returns the trunk to the anatomical position – when the angle between the trunk and hip decreases
17Trunk extension
Extending the thoracic spine into almost a straight line
18Inversion
Combination of movement of several joints of the feet – elevates the foots medial side and brings the sole of the foot medially
Ex: foot turns inwards medially– sole up and inwards
19Eversion
Combination of movement of several joints of the feet – elevates the foots lateral side and moves the sole laterally
Ex: foot turns outwards laterally – sole moves laterally
20Dorsi Flexion
Movement of the ankle – lifting toes towards skins
Ex: lifting the foot off the gas pedal
21Plantar Flexion
Movement of the ankle – pointing toes away from the shins
Ex: ballerina pointing her toes
22Supination
Pivoting action of the forearm, when the radius and ulna lie parallel to one another
Occurs at hand and feet
Ex: carrying a bowl of soup – palm face up
23Pronation
Pivoting action of the forearm, when the radius crosses over the ulna – palm face down
Occurs at hand and feet
Ex: dropping a bowl of soup
24Sagittal plane
Divides the body into left and right
Medial and Lateral
Flexion and extension
25Frontal plane
Divides the body into front and back
Posterior and anterior
Abduction and adduction
26Transverse Plane
Divides the body into upper and lower parts
Superior and inferior
Rotation
