1
Mass
A measure of the amount of matter in an object
2
Mass units
kg
3
Weight
A measure of the force of gravity on an object
4
Weight Units
Newtons
5
What do you measure mass with?
balance
6
What do you measure weight with?
Newton-meter
7
Weight equals
Mass x gravitational field strength
8
W=
m x g
9
gravity unit
N/kg
10
Density
the measure of how much mass there is per cubic cm/m of an object
11
Density Units
kg/cubic metre
12
Density equals
mass/volume
13
p (rho) =
m/v
14
pressure
the amount of force exerted per unit area of a surface
15
pressure units
Pascals, N/m squared
16
Pressure equals
force/area
17
p=
F/A
18
Estimation of the pressure something has on the floor
The larger the surface area, the smaller the pressure because it is distributed over a bigger area
19
Hooke's Law
Extension is directly proportional to force until the spring reaches it's elastic limit
20
force-extension graph
A plot showing how an object extends as the force applied increases. For an elastic object, the gradient should be linear up to the limit of proportionality. The gradient gives the spring constant.
21
plastic object
one that does not regain its original shape when the forces deforming it are removed
22
elastic object
one that regains its original shape when the forces deforming it are removed
23
Speed
the measure of how far you travel in a set amount of time
24
Speed Units
m/s, mph, km/h
25
Speed equals
distance/time
26
s=
d/t
27
Acceleration
The rate at which velocity changes
28
Acceleration Units
m/s squared
29
Acceleration equals
change in velocity/time taken
30
a=
(v-u)/t
31
stopping distance =
Thinking distance + braking distance
32
Thinking distance is affected by
Your speed and your reaction time (affected by tiredness, drugs, alcohol, old age and inexperience)
33
Braking distance is affected by
Your speed, the mass of your vehicle, the condition of your brakes and tyres, weather conditions and the road surface
34
How does mass change on different planets?
It doesn't because the amount of matter in an object stays the same.
35
How does weight change on different planets?
Your weight changes based on the gravitational pull on the planet you are on. The amount of gravity is based on the size of the planet, the bigger the planet, the stronger the gravitational pull. So the higher the gravity, the higher your weight.
36
an experiment to measure the density of cuboids
place the cuboid on the top pan balance and record its mass in grams
use a ruler to measure the length (l), width (w) and height (h) of a cuboid
calculate the volume of the cuboid using: volume= l×w×h (where measurements are in cm and the volume is in cm3)
use the measurements from steps 1 and 3 to calculate the density of the substance using : density= mass/volume (p= m/V)
repeat and average
37
an experiment to measure the density of liquids
place an empty measuring cylinder on the balance and measure its mass in grams
add liquid into the measuring cylinder and measure its new mass
calculate the difference: mass of liquid = (cylinder mass) - (overall mass)
read the volume at eye level
use the volume and the difference to calculate the density of the liquid using: density= mass/volume (p= m/V)
repeat and average
38
an experiment to measure the density of irregularly shaped objects
place the object on the balance and record its mass in grams
fill the eureka can until the water is level with the bottom of the pipe
place a measuring cylinder under the pipe, ready to collect the displaced water
carefully drop the object into the can and wait until no more water runs into the cylinder
measure the volume of the displaced water at eye level
use the mass and volume of the displaced water to calculate the density of the object using: density= mass/ volume (p= m/V)
39
why do some things float in water?
the average density of an object determines whether it floats or sinks- a solid object will float in water if it has a lower density than water
40
how can you lie on a bed of nails?
your body is spread out across the whole bed so hundreds of nails are supporting your body's weight, not just one, so your body shouldn't exert enough pressure on one singular nail for it to puncture your skin
41
How do snowshoes work?
they have a large surface to help distribute the weight of your body on the snow so you don't sink
42
Where does air pressure come from?
Air is composed of molecules, all of which have a mass and constantly weigh down on you
43
an experiment to measure speed
create a ramp using a flat surface
measure the length of the ramp, using a metre ruler, to find the distance the car will travel
mark where the car is starting (so it starts in the same place every time)
using a stopwatch, measure the time it takes the car to go down the ramp
using the equation: speed= distance/time, calculate the speed of the car
repeat to find an average speed
44
distance-time graph
Line graph used to show the speed of a moving object
45
Speed From A Distance Time Graph
speed= distance/time (x and y axis)
46
pressure difference =
density x gravitational field strength x depth
