1
Who Created the First Aircraft Engine
Charles Edward Taylor "Charlie."
2
When did Charlie die?
in 1957 at 87 years old
3
Where was Charlie buried?
at the portal of folded wings shrine to aviation in burbank california
4
Wright Engine Parts
5
Pistons
- first used in steam engines in 1770s
6
The Gnome (Rotary Engine)
a french engine (rotary engine) in 1908 that introduced air cooling as a way to eliminate plumbing and lighten the weight
7
Water Cooled Motors
- american built
- sought 400 hp
- water cooled engines tended to outperfom air cooled engines
- stayed cool by having antifreeze flow through them with a radiator to cool the heated water
- Rolls Royce only built water cooled engines at the time
8
Air Cooled Rotaries
- least popular of the other choices
- dispesed with radiators that leaked, cooling jackets often corroded, and water pumps usally failed
9
Compressors (Jet Engine)
pulls in air by using compressors. The compressor rotates rapidly to compress the air which then flows into the combustor.
10
Combustor (Jet Engine)
here fuel is injected, mized with this air, and burned. Heats the air to a high temperature. Hot high pressure air then passes through the Turbine
11
Turbine (Jet Engine)
Spins hot high pressure air rapidly to draw power from this hot airflow to spin the compressor.
12
Dual Spool Concept
- combined two engines into one
- engine had two compressors which each rotated independently with the inner one giving high compression for good performance
