1Disease Classification
Malaria- protozoan disease of the blood
2Causative Organism
Plasmodium; P. falciparum
3Get to Know your CA
Eukaryote; protozoa, obligate intracellular parasite, nonmotile, complex multi host life span
4Epidemiology: Reservoir
Humans and Mosquitos
5Epidemiology: POE
Skin- circulatory system
6Epidemiology: MOT
Mosquito Bite- Vector Female Anopheles mosquito; vertical, lantent infection
7Incubation Period
1-5 weeks
8Pathogenesis
Protozoans replicate in human hepatocytes (liver cells). Cells lyse and release of next protozoa stage causes inflammation and fever. Protozoa replicate in RBCs causes cellular damage and adhesion to vasucular surfaces. Ruptured RBC is associated with inflammation, fever, anemia, and depriving tissue of O2
9Symptoms
Cycles of flue like symptoms (more severe version); fever, chills, tiredness, nausea/vomitng, headache, and diarrhea
10Complications
Anemia, Jaundice, seizures, coma, kidney failure, relapse (P. vivax and P. ovale), mortality (429k-731k)
11Prevention
limit contact with mosquitos: avoiding traveling to areas where malaria is endemic, insecticides, barriers- protective clothing or nets, repellents- DEET, GM Mosquito; Vaccine (not very effective- 30%); Prophylaxis
12What is Prophylaxis?
When you take the treatment drug in order to avoud contracting the diease; ex. for malaria you would use Ant-malaria drugs such as Chloroquine
13Anti-malaria Drug combinations
Mefloquine, Chloroquine, quinine and doxycycline
