11. The Mouth
Saliva contains enzyme called amylase. Tongue mixes food with saliva.
22. The Oesophagus
Muscular tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach.
3Peristalsis
Contraction and relaxation of the muscles of the oesophagus which helps to move the food down towards the stomach.
43. The Stomach
Walls of the stomach produce gastric juice (Pepsin, Hydrochloric acid, Mucus (protects the stomach)).
5Mechanical Digestion
Churning of the stomach mixes the contents.
6Chemical Digestion
Pepsin breaks down proteins to amino acids.
74. The Liver and Gall bladder
Liver produces bile. Gall bladder stores the bile and sends it to small intestine. Bile emulsifies fats (forms small droplets).
85. The Pancreas
Produces pancreatic juice which contains: Amylase, Trypsin, Lipase.
96. The Small Intestine
Divided into 2 parts: the Duodenum and the Ileum.
10Duodenum
Receives bile and pancreatic juice. Chemical digestion occurs here.
11Ileum
Absorption of digested food molecules.
12Absorption
Movement of digested molecules into the bloodstream from the small intestine.
137. The Large Intestine
Absorb water from the remaining undigested waste. Contains bacteria of the gut (boost immune system, produce vitamins, digest food).
14Rectum
Stores faeces before removed from the body.
15Anus
The opening where the faeces leave the body.
16Egestion
Removal of unused food waste from the body.
