1Quod ubi Caesar animadvertit,
When Caesar noticed this, he ordered
2nāvīs longās,
the long ships,
3quārum et speciēs erat barbarīs inūsitātior
of which both the appearance was rather unfamiliar to the barbarians
4et mōtus ad ūsum expedītior,
and the movement swifter for use,
5paulum removērī ab onerāriīs nāvibus
to be moved back a little bit from the cargo ships
6et rēmīs incitārī
and to be spurred on by oars
7et ad latus apertum hostium cōnstituī
and to be set up opposite the exposed flank of the enemies
8atque inde fundīs, sagittīs, tormentīs hostēs prōpellī āc submovērī iussit;
and he ordered the enemies from there to be driven back and moved away by slingshots, arrows and catapults;
9quae rēs māgnō ūsuī nostrīs fuit.
which thing was of great use to our men.
10Nam et nāvium figūrā
For both by the shape of the ships
11et rēmōrum mōtū
and the movement of the oars
12et inūsitātō genere tormentōrum
and the unusual type of catapults
13permōtī barbarī cōnstitērunt
the barbarians scared stopped
14āc paulum modo pedem rettulērunt.
and retreated a little bit.
15Atque nostrīs mīlitibus cunctantibus,
And with our soldiers delaying,
16māximē propter altitūdinem maris,
most of all because of the depth of the sea,
17quī decimae legiōnis aquilam ferēbat,
he who was carrying the standard of the tenth legion,
18contestātus deōs,
having called upon the gods,
19ut ea rēs legiōnī fēlīciter ēvenīret,
that this matter turn out happily for the legion,
20' Dēsilīte', inquit, ' mīlitēs,
he said "Jump, soldiers,
21nisi vultis aquilam hostibus prōdere;
unless you wish to betray the standard to the enemies:
22ego certē meum reī pūblicae atque imperātōrī officium praestiterō.'
I certainly will have displayed my duty to the republic and general."
23Hoc cum vōce māgnā dīxisset,
When he had said this with a great voice,
24sē ex nāvī prōiēcit
he threw himself from the ship
25atque in hostēs aquilam ferre coepit.
and began to carry the standard towards the enemies.
26Tum nostrī cohortātī inter sē,
Then our men having given encouragement among themselves,
27nē tantum dēdecus admitterētur,
so that such a great disgrace not be allowed,
28ūniversī ex nāvī dēsiluērunt.
as one they jumped from the ship.
29Hōs item ex proximīs prīmī nāvibus cum cōnspēxissent,
Likewise the foremost from the nearby ships when they had seen these ones,
30subsecūtī hostibus appropīnquārunt.
having followed closely they approached the enemies.
