1
Motivation
Need or desire that energizes and directs behavior
2
Drive Reduction Theory
Idea that a need creates a drive that motivated an organism to satisfy it
3
Homeostasis
Balence or constant internal state
4
Yerks Dodson Law
Performance increases with arousal up to a point which then decreases
5
Optimal Arousal
Motivated behaviors increase arousal
6
Maslows Hierarchy of Needs
Pyramid of human needs, begining with physiological needs that must be met before higher level, saftey needs.
7
Glucose
Sugar thats in your blood stream used as fuel for energy. When its low you get hungry.
8
Basal Metabolic Rate
Bodys resting rate of energy burning
9
Incentive Theory of Motivation
How people are motivated by incentives
10
Self Actualization
Top on pyramid of needs, the process by which a person reaches their full potential.
11
Set Point
Weight thermostat. When weight is lower junger rises and metabolism decreases.
12
Lateral Hypothalamus
Makes your hungry
13
Ventromedial Hypothalamus
Stops hunger, makes you full.
14
Ghrelin
Hormone, is caused by an empty stomach, says im hungry
15
Orexin Vs Leptin
1. Hunger triggering horemone sent by the hypothalamus 2. Protein Horemone from fat cells. causes brain to increase metabolism and decrease hunger
16
Insulin
Pancreas horemone controling blood glucose, furnace.
17
PYY
Digestive tract horemone says im not hungry.
18
Unit bias
Tendency for people to want to complete a unit of a task
19
Obesity
more fat, bigger weight
20
Sexual Response Cycle and Phases
The 4 stages of sexual Response. Excitement-genitals engorged with blood, Plateau-peak excitement breathing, pulse and blood pressure increase, orgasm-bpm of 70-115 orgasm facilitating conception, Resolution-Body cools down.
21
Estrogen
sex horemone higher in women then men contributing with female characteristics and ovulation and sexual receptivity
22
Testosterone
both male and female. more in male to stimulate the growth of penis in fetus and male sex.
23
Affiliation Needs
the need to fit in or be part of a group
24
Self Esteem
persons opinion of themselves including abilities and or limitations.
25
Prefrontal Cortex
controls and regulates thoughts, actions, and emotional responses to stress
26
Ostracism
feeling ignored and or excluded from a group or event
27
Analytical cortex
activated by harmful and contextual stimuli and is involved in pain process
28
Narcissism
Self esteem gone awry, self important self focused and self promoting. Center of attention
29
Emotions
response of the whole organism involving physiological arousal, expressive behavior, and consious experience.
30
James Lange theory
our biological arousal makes your emotion
31
Cannon Bard Theory
Biological and and experience emotion is triggerd simultaneously.
32
Schater Two Factor Theory
to experience emotion one needs to be physically aroused and needs to cognitively label the arousal.
33
Cognitive Appraisal
Labeling/ interpretation of stimuli
34
Autonomic Nervous System
controls involuntary processes, controling heat rate, blood pressure, lungs, sexual arousal, and digestive tract.
35
Sympathetic Nervous System
controls flight or fight, when threaten the SNS prepares body to fight goving bursts of enrgy under danger.
36
Parasympathetic Nervous System
relaxs body after flight or fight
37
Spillover Effect
How arousal can spill over from one event to another. You can basically catch someone elses emotion
38
Facial Feedback
tendency for facial muscles to trigger corresponding feelings when activated.
39
Behavior Feedback
tendency for how you behave to correspond to how you feel. Walk slouchy feel down.
40
Stress
proces of how we perceive and respond to events called stressors that we appraise as threatening or challenging
41
Eustress vs Distress
1. is positive stress thats motivating 2. is negative stress that negatively impact a person
42
General Adaptation Syndrome
Concept saying the bodys adaptive response to stress in three phases, alarm, resistance, and exhaustion. An event happens that triggers your SNS so you enter the alarm stage, entering flight or fight. Then on resistance your adrenal glands horemones putting you on a peak of attention. Then exhaustion alertness comes down weakening your immune system.
43
Tend and Befriend Response
under stress people (women) provide support to others in search for support from others
44
Psychoneuroimmunology
Study of how your body, neural system and endocrine processes together affct the immune system and health.
45
Coronary Heart Disease
Clogging of the vessels that nourish the heart muscle , leading cause of death in developed countries
