1
What is species diversity?
number of species found in a particular area
2
competition
between two species for limited resources has a negative effect on the abundance of both species; abundance of both species decreases (neither gain)
3
predation
predator feeds on prey; abundance of predator increases, and abundance of prey decreases
4
parasitism
parasite obtains nutrients from host but does not kill host; abundanance of parasite increases, and abundance of host decreases
5
commensalism
one species benefits while the other is not harmed; abundance of one species increases, and the other is not affected (neutral)
6
mutualism
2 species interact so that they both benefit; abundance of both species increases
7
What is the role of a keystone species?
some communities have one species that stabilizes the community and holds the web together
8
How do exotic species bring harm to a stable ecological system?
outcompeting native species, disrupting ecosystems, and causing population declines
9
autotrophs
make their own food (ex: plants); take in inorganic nutrients and an outside energy source to produce organic nutrients; producers
10
chemoautrophs
obtain energy by oxidizing inorganic compounds (ammonia nitrities, sulfides)
11
photoautotrophs
photosynthesizers, use energy of the sun
12
heterotrophs
need an external source of organic nutrients; consumers
13
trophic level
level of nourishment within a food web or chain: producers (1st lvl), herbivores (2nd lvl), carnivores (3rd 4th lvl); trophic level 1 has the most energy, as each trophic level goes up they only keep 10% of the energy from the previous lvl bc most of the energy is lost as heat
14
order of trophic levels
primary producer (autotroph) -> primary consumer (heterotroph) -> secondary consumer -> tertiary consumer
15
terrestrial ecosystems (biomes)
contains communties adapted to regional climate
16
What is biomagnification?
the toxins in organisms get more and more concentrated as they move up the food chain
17
What are the different major biomes?
tropical rain forests, savanna, temperate grasslands, taiga, tundra, desert
18
rain forest
on the equator, greatest amount of rainfall, high average temp
19
savanna
african grassland, alternating wet and dry season
20
temperate grassland
receive less rainfall than temperate forest, more water than deserts
21
taiga
cold northern coniferous forest
22
tundra
north, no trees just grass and cold. soil is frozen
23
desert
very little rain, hot days cold nights
24
What major factor defines a biome?
climate
25
What is climate?
long-term weather patterns
26
ecological niche
niche (their own room); specific to each species; role the species plays in its community
27
competitive exclusion principle
no 2 species can occupy the same niche at the same time
28
community stability
fragile web of interdependencies
29
food web
interconnecting paths of energy flow; multiple food chains interacting together
