1CNS
central nervous system
- brain and spinal chord
- control region
- recieves information, processes and sends messages
2PNS
peripheral nervous system
- vast network of nerves and cell bodies
- carries impulses throughout the body to and from the CNS
3ganglia
the cell bodies of the peripheral nervous system are located in groups called ganglia, found outside the CNS in vertebrae close to the spinal chord
4cerebospinal fluid
- fills the space between the inner two meninges
- acts as a protective shock absorber
- exchange medium between the blood and brain
5Cerebrum
- largest part of the brain
- contains 75% of nerve cells in the brain
- right hemisphere controls left hand side of the body
- left hemisphere controls right side of the body
6corpus callosum
a bundle of nerve fibres that allows the two sides of the cerebrum to comunicate with each other
7what is the cerebral cortex?
the outer layer of the cerebrum, its heavily folded to increase surface area
8what does the cerebral cortex control
- muscles
- the senses
- learning
- emotions
- memory
-understanding
9cerebellum
second largest part of the brain, at the back of the brain. is a thin heavily folded layer.
Controls:
- muscular coordination
- balance
10thalamus
walnut sized, below the cerebrum. Acts as a sorting centre for the brain
11hypothalamus
below the thalamus
- regulates internal enviornment of body( homeostasis) monitors appetite, thirst, body temp ect
-links with pituatary gland to regulate the production of many hormones
12medulla oblongata
a swelling at the top of the spinal chord, controls involuntary actions eg breathing, swallowing, vomiting ect
13neuron
a nerve cell / basic units of the nervous system and are specialised to carry info from one place to another within the body.
14sensory neurons
carry electrical impulses from sense organs to the central nervous system.
15interneurons / intermediate, relay or association neurons
carry electrical impulses between sensory neurons and motor neurons ( not enclosed in meylin sheaths)
16motor neurons
carry electrical impulses from the central nervous system ( to a muscle or gland)
17synapse
a region where two neurons come into close contact
18synaptic cleft
the tiny gap between the two neurons at a synapse
