4Disaster
consequence of inappropriately managed risks
5Risk
product of a combination of both hazard/s and vulnerability
6Impacts
- loss of life, injury, disease
- physical, mental and social well-being
- damage to property, destructions of assets, loss of service, social and economic destructions and environmental degradation
7Concept of Disaster Risk
The potential disaster losses, in lives, health status, livelihoods, assets and services, which could occur to a particular community or society over some specified future time period.
8Exposure
the degree to which the elements at risk are likely to experience hazard events of different magnitudes.
9Hazard
a dangerous phenomenon, substance, human activity or condition that may cause loss of life, injury or other health impacts, property damage, loss of livelihood and services, social and economic disruption, or environmental damage.
10Vulnerability
may arise from various physical, social, economic, and environmental factors such as poor design and construction of buildings, inadequate protection of assets, lack of public information and awareness, limited official recognition of risks and preparedness measures, and disregard for wise environmental management.
11Physical vulnerability
may be determined by aspects such as population density levels, remoteness of a settlement, the site, design and materials used for critical infrastructure and for housing
12Social vulnerability
refers to the inability of people, organizations and societies to withstand adverse impacts to hazards due to characteristics inherent in social interactions, institutions and systems of cultural values. It is linked to the level of well being of individuals, communities and society
13Economic vulnerability
The level of vulnerability is highly dependent upon the economic status of individuals, communities and nations.
14Environmental vulnerability
Natural resource depletion and resource degradation
15Disaster Risk Reduction
through systematic efforts to analyze and manage the causal factors of disasters, including through reduced exposures to hazards, lessened vulnerability of people and property, wise management of land and the environment, and improved preparedness for adverse events.
16Types of Disasters
Natural and Man-made Disaster
17Natural Disaster
Affects humans and/or the built environment. Loss depends on the capacity of the population to support or resist the disaster- their resilience.
18Landslide
Sliding down of a mass of earth or rock from a mountain or cliff.
19Drought
A deficiency of rainfall over an extend period – season, a year or several year.
20Fire
An occurrence in which something burns or the event of something burning.
21Volcanic Eruption
Sudden occurrence of violent discharge of steam and volcanic material
22Flood
An overflowing of large amount of water beyond its normal confines, especially over what is normally dry land
23Cyclone
Strong winds that are transformed over the ocean. A large air mass that rotates around a strong center of low atmospheric pressure.
24Flashfloods
A rapid flooding of geomorphic lowlying areas: washes, rivers, dry lakes and basins. It may caused by heavy rain associated with thunder storm, hurricane, tropical storm, or melt ice from ice or snow flowing over ice sheets or snowfields.
25Tsunami
A series of waves in a body of water caused by the displacement of a large volume of water, generally in an ocean or a large lake.
26Heavy rains
form of droplets that have condensed from atmospheric water vapor and then precipitated- that is, become heavy enough to fall under gravity
27Pest Infestation
Any organism that damages crop, injures or irritates livestock or man, or reduces the fertility of land.
28Tornadoes
A violently rotating column of air extending from a cumulonimbus cloud to the ground.
29Man-made Disasters
Events that are caused by humans and occur in or close to human settlements according to IFRC. It is the consequence of technological or human hazards
30Epidemics
A sudden disease outbreak that affects a large number of people in a particular region, community, or population.
31War
A state of usually open and declared armed hostile conflict between states or nations.
32Oil Spill
the release of a liquid petroleum hydrocarbon into the environment, especially the marine ecosystem, due to human activity, and is a form of pollution.
33Environmental Pollution
Contamination of the physical and biological components of the earth/atmosphere system such as extent of normal environmental processes are adversely affected
34Accident
Undesirable or unfortunate happening that occurs unintentionally and usually results harm, injury, damage or loss; casualty.
35Armed Conflicts
Contested incompatibility which concerns gov’t and/or territory where the use of armed force between two parties, of which at least one is the government of a state.
36Industrial hazard
Any real or potential conditions produced by industries that can cause injury or death to personnel or loss of product or property.
37Sea Mishaps
An event which usually Accident involves ship/s and can involve military action. Because of the nature of maritime travel, there is often a substantial loss of life.
38Explosions
A release of mechanical, chemical, or nuclear energy in a sudden and often violent manner with the generation of high temperature and usually with the release of gases.
39Terrorist Attack
A surprise attack involving the deliberate use of violence against civilians in the hope of attaining political or religious aim.
