1
What's the equation for the change in gravitational potential energy when an object is above ground?
change in GPE(J)= mass(kg) x gravitational field strength (N/kg) x change in vertical height (m)
2
What's the equation for kinetic energy?
Kinetic energy(J) = 0.5 x mass( kg) x speed2 (m/s2)
3
Concepts of a Sankey Diagram
(To scale)
1.Useful energy= points to the right
2.Wasteful energy= points down
4
Define conservation of energy
energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be converted from one form to another
5
What's the energy transfer when an object is projected up a slope?
Kinetic energy transfers to gravitational potential energy
6
What's the energy transfer when a vehicle is slowing down?
Kinetic energy transfers to heat energy from friction against the floor
7
What's the energy transfer when bringing a kettle to boil in an electric kettle?
Electric energy transfers to thermal energy and perhaps some light and sound energy
8
Define closed system
Don't interact and are not influenced by the external environment.
9
What happens when energy transfers occur in a closed system?
There is no change of energy in that system
10
When do mechanical processes become wasteful?
When they cause a rise in temperature so dissipating energy in heating the surroundings
11
What is wasted energy?
Energy that is not usefully transferred. We say that this wasted energy dissipates. Fo example, electric energy in a Tv is transferred to sound and light energy which is useful but also thermal which isn't.
12
How does lubrication reduce unwanted energy transfers?
It reduces friction from kinetic energy which causes thermal energy transfer
13
How does thermal insulation reduce unwanted energy transfers?
It creates a barrier from energy from escaping. For example, on a house, the walls are built to be thick to reduce thermal energy from escaping
14
Define thermal conductivity
The ability of an object to transfer heat
15
What's the effect of thickness of walls in a building?
The rate of energy transfer is reduced when the wall is thicker so less energy escapes, keeping the building warm
16
What's the effect of thermal conductivity on a building?
House are made from materials that are poor conductors to prevent thermal energy from leaving
17
What's the equation for efficiency?
Useful energy output / total energy input
18
How can efficiency be increased?
Mechanical devices can be made more efficient through lubrication to reduce the friction between moving parts of a machine and increase the amount of useful energy transferred.
19
Define non-renewable energy
Energy that can never be replaced once it is completely used up
20
Define renewable energy
energy made from a naturally replenishable source that won't run out
21
Give examples of non-renewable energy resources
oil, coal, natural gas
22
Give examples of renewable energy resources
Wind power, bio-fuel, hydro-electricity, tidal power, solar power
23
What are the advantages and disadvantages non-renewable energy resources
Adv- Don't depend on weather, cheap to produce, good supply at the moment
Disadv- Produce green house gases, non-renewable
24
What are the advantages and disadvantages of solar power?
Adv- can be small and portable, no pollution, can be used remotely
Disadv- Expensive, depends on light intensity
25
What are the advantages and disadvantages of wind power?
Adv- no pollution, running costs are low
Disadv- noisy, looks bad, depends on wind, high set up costs
26
What are the advantages and disadvantages of tidal power?
Adv- No pollution
Disadv- tides aren't strong enough in the Uk, not very useful, large areas get flooded
27
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Biomass?
Adv- No CO2 emissons
Disadv- Smells bad, needs complete combustion
28
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Geothermal?
Adv-no pollution, low running costs
Disadv- cost of drilling is expensive, limited amount of places
29
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Hydroelectric?
Adv- no pollution, no fuel costs, will never run out
Disadv- very expensive, need large areas of land
30
What is solar power?
energy from the sun that is converted into thermal or electrical energy
31
What is wind power?
The use of a windmill to drive an electric generator
32
What is tidal power?
As the tide comes in, water rushes in and turbines spin the other way
33
What is biomass energy?
energy produced by burning organic matter, such as wood, food scraps, and alcohol
34
What is geothermal energy?
energy from hot rocks underground
35
What is hydroelectric energy?
using the power of moving water like tides and dams to produce electricity
