1
What are PBS findings in hereditary hypersegmented neutrophils?
hypersegmentation (5+)
absence of ovalocytes
anemia
2
What are PBS findings in Pelger-Huet anomaly?
HYPOsegmentation of nucleus of neutrophils
homozygous = 1 blob
hetero = bilobe
Caused by lamin b receptor mutation (autosomal dominant + hereditary)
>50% must be hyposegmented to count
3
What are PBS findings in Chediak Higashi syndrome?
Big granules (lysosome inclusions in cytoplasm)
Mutation of Lyst-1 (responsible for trafficking lysozomes)
Affects function of WBC; patients die youn (~2 yrs old)
Melanocyted affected; albanisim/ partial albaism bc melanin can't be transported out of cell
4
What are PBS findings in alder-reilly anomaly?
Large, dark granules in ALL WBCs
Rare autosomal recessive disorder
Can't break down mucopolysaccharides- accumulate in lysosomes
Normal WBC level + function
5
What are PBS findings in may-hegglin anomaly?
Platelet disorder (inherited)
Giant platelets, Dohle-like bodies
Thrombocytopenia
No toxic granulation present!
Mutation in Myosin-1
6
What is histoplasma capculatum (hisotplasmosis)
Fungus seen in sepsis
Heterozygous basophilia
usually occurs in immunocompromised patients
7
What is candida albicans?
Yeast which can be seen in sepsis
uniform basophili in monocytes + neutrophils
can be artifact if not found inside cell
Just call yeast since can't differentiate on microscope!
8
How is bacteria seen in the PBS?
inside of bacteria, seen as small dark inclusions
9
What is a necrobiotic neutrophil?
dying/dead neutrophil
10
what is seen in the PBS of leukemoid reaction?
Increase in WBC in response to pathogen
Postiive luekocyte alkaline phosphatase (LAP)
Could see vacuoles as body responds to pathogen
11
What is seen on the PBS of acute myelogenous leukemia?
> 20% blasts in Bone marrow
Increase in WBC
MPO + SBB stain is positive!!!
