11Airspeed Indicator Markings
White Arc
- flap opearting range
- min is Vso and Max is Vfe
Green Arc
- normal operating range
- starts at Vs1 and ends at Vno
Yellow Arc
- caution range
- fly only in smooth air with caution
- is relative to Va
Red Line
- warning range Vne
- structural damage is possible here
12Types of Speeds
IAS
- indicated air speed
CAS
- calibrated air speed
- is the indicated airspeed corrected for instrument and position errors
EAS
- equivalent airspeed
- calibrated airspeed corrected for compressibility error
TAS
- true airspeed
- actual speed through the air
- corrected for non-standard temperatutre and pressure
Mach Number
- the ratio of true airspeed relative to local speed of sound
Ground Speed
- actual speed across the ground
- true airspeed corrected for wind conditions
Critical Mach
- lowest mach number at which the airflow over any part of the aircraft reaches the speed of sound
13Max Airspeeds in the U.S. (91.117)

Under Class Bravo or inside VFR Corridor through Class Bravo
- 200kts
At or below 2,500ft within 4nm of Class Charlie or Delta Airport
- 200kts
Mach 1.0 or Higher
- speed of sound
- above 10,000ft MSL
14Indicated Altitude
- uncorrected altitude indicated on altimeter when barometric pressure is set to current pressure setting
Pressure Altitude
- altitude corrected for nonstandard pressure
Density Altitude
- pressure altitude corrected for non-standard temperature
True Altitude
- altitude above mean sea level (MSL)
Absolute Altitude
- altitude above ground level
