1
What is acceleration?
The rate at which an object speeds up, which is calculated from change in velocity (m) divided by time (s*2)
2
What is average speed?
The distance travelled by an object over a measured time interval
3
What is the conservation of momentum?
The idea that the total momentum of a system of objects after a collision is the same as the total momentum before the collision
4
What is deceleration?
when an object slows down
5
What does directly proportional mean?
a relationship of the form “y is proportional to x”: plotting a graph of y against x will produce a straight line graph
6
What is displacement?
the distance moved in a particular direction
7
What is distance?
the quantity tha measures how far an object travels in any given direction
8
What is a force?
where a push or pull on an object can cause an object to accelerate
9
What is gradient?
the slope of the graph (change in y divided by change in x)
10
What is inertia?
the difficulty for objects to change their velocity
11
What is inertial mass?
The measure of how difficult it is to change an object’s velocity
12
What does inversely proportional mean?
a relationship of the form y is inversely proportional to 1 divided by x
13
What is magnitude?
the size of a quantity
14
What is mass?
the quantity that measures the amount of matter in an object (kilograms, kg and symbol m)
15
What is a metre?
the SI unit of distance (symbol m)
16
What is momentum?
the product of mass and velocity of an object (symbol p, kilogram metre per second or kgm/s)
17
What is a Newton?
SI unit of force (symbol n, 1n is the force required to give a 1kg object an acceleration of 1m/s*2)
18
What does Newton’s 1st Law state?
An object at rest will remain at rest if its resultant force is at 0; an object moving at a constant speed will continue to do so in a straight line
19
What does Newton’s 2nd Law state?
The acceleration of an object is proportional to the resultant force acting on the object and inversely proportional to the mass of the object (equation form F=m x a)
20
What is non-uniform motion?
movement in which the speed of an object changes
21
What is a scalar quantity?
a measurable quantity that only has magnitude and no direction
Examples include mass, speed, time and volume
22
What is speed?
distance travelled by an object per unit of time (metres per seconds, m/s)
23
What is uniform motion?
the movement of an object in a straight line at a constant speed
24
What is a vector quantity?
a measurable quantity that has both magnitude and direction
Examples include velocity, displacement and acceleration
25
What is velocity?
The speed at which an object moves in a certain direction
26
What is momentum?
how difficult it is to stop the movement of an object
27
What is the formula for momentum?
Mass x velocity or kg x m/s
