1
Can you give an example of a transfer of energy from potential to kinetic?
we eat food that is stored as potential energy. we can then walk which converts that potential energy into kinetic energy
2
potential energy
stored energy
3
kinetic energy
the energy of motion
4
calorie
how the energy contained in food is measured. calories in food actually means kilocalories (1,000 calories)
5
first energy law - the law of conservation of energy
energy cannot be created nor can it be destroyed. it can only be transformed from one form to another
6
second energy law
reveals that some energy is lost, often as heat, for every energy transformation
7
What is entropy?
relative amount of disorganization. the default state
8
What is needed to keep order in entropy?
energy
9
ATP
a nucleotide with three phosphate groups
10
describe the cycle of ATP
energy is stored as a phosphate group and added to ADP to make ATP; energy is released as a phosphate group is removed
11
What is the basic pattern of the flow of energy?
sun -> chloroplast -> mitochondria
12
How are chloroplasts and mitochondria connected to ATP?
we consume plants that have used their chloroplasts to photosynthesize and create carbohydrate or animals that have consumed plants. oxygen and nutrient molecules enter our mitochondria which produces ATP
13
Some energy is lost as heat, how does this affect our bodies?
it stabilizes our body's temperature; maintains homeostasis
14
enzymes
they make chemical reactions happen faster than under normal conditions; less energy used
15
metabolic pathways
series of linked reactions
16
What group of organic macromolecules are enzymes classifed under?
proteins
17
What is catabolism?
breakdown reaction; breaks down molecules into smaller units
18
What is anabolism?
synthesis reaction; constructs macromolecules from smaller units
19
What does it mean to catalyze a reaction?
to speed it up
20
substrate
molecule that gets manipulated
21
Why are protein folding patterns important for enzymes?
the change in the shape of the active site facilitates the reaction; induced fit
22
feedback inhibition
an active enzyme is prevented from combining with its substrate; activity of almost every enzyme in a cell regulated by this; occurs when a product is in abundance
23
solute
something that dissolves in a liquid
24
solvent
a liquid that dissolves a solute
25
facilitated diffusion
uses transport proteins in a plasma membrane
26
isotonic
same solute, concentration of solutes same on both sides. cell neither gains or loses its water
27
hypertonic
high solute, concentration of solute outside cell more than inside cell, cell loses water
28
hypotonic
low solute, concentration of solute outside cell lower than inside cell, cell gains water
29
plasmolysis
occurs when plant cells are placed in a hypertonic solution. plant cells get turgid (stiff)
30
diffusion
molecules move down their concentration gradient until equilibrium is achieved and they are distributed equally
31
osmosis
the diffusion of wtaer across a semipermeable membrane, from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
32
What happens when a cell with 1% salt gets put into a 10% salt solution? Which way does the water flow?
the cell will lose water and shrivel since there is a higher concentration of solute outside the cell than inside the cell; it will shrivel and undergo plasmolysis. the water flows towards the inside of the tube
33
active transport
requires the input of energy to move molecules against a concentration gradient (e.g. sodium-potassium pump)
34
What form of energy can be used for active transport?
ATP
35
exocytosis
transports macromolecules out of a cell via vesicle formation and often results in secretion
36
endocytosis
transports macromoleules into a cell via vesicle formation
37
passive transport
requires not metabolic energy and moves substances from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
38
bulk transport
macromolecules are too big for transport proteins, so vesicles formation takes care of it
