1
What are the modelling assumptions for a particle?
-mass of object concentrated at single point
-rotational forces and air resustance can be ignored
2
What are the modelling assumptions for a rod?
-mass concentrated along a line
-no thickness
-rigid (no bending or buckling)
3
What are the modelling assumptions for lamina?
-mass distributed across flat surface
4
What are the modelling assumptions for a uniform body?
-mass of object concentrated at single point at geometrical centre of body (centre of mass)
5
What are the modelling assumptions for a light object?
-treat as having 0 mass
-tension same at both ends of light string
6
What are the modelling assumptions for an inextensible string?
-acceleration same in objects connected by taut inextensible string
7
What are the modelling assumptions for a smooth surface?
-assume no friction between surface and object on it
8
What are the modelling assumptions for a rough surface?
-objects in contact with it experience frictional force if acted on by force
9
What are the modelling assumptions for a wire?
treated as 1 dimensional
10
What are the modelling assumptions for a smooth and light pulley?
-pulley has no mass
-tension is same either side of pulley
11
What are the modelling assumptions for a bead?
-moves freely along wire or string
-tension same on either siide of bead
12
What are the modelling assumptions for a peg?
-dimensionless and fixed
-can be rough or smooth as specified
13
What are the modelling assumptions for air resistance?
-usually modelled as being negligible
14
What are the modelling assumptions for gravity?
-all objects with mass attracted to earth
-earth’s gravity is uniform and acts vertically downwards
-g is constant and is 9.8m/s2
15
What is the SI unit for mass?
kg
16
What is the SI unit for length/displacement?
m
17
What is the SI unit for time?
s
18
What is weight?
force acting vertically downwards due to gravity
19
What is normal reaction?
force acting perpendicular to surface when an object is in contact with surface
20
What is friction?
force opposing motion between 2 rough surfaces
21
What is tension?
force acting on an object pulled by a string
22
What is thrust/ compression of a rod?
force acting on object if object pushed using light rod
23
What is buoyancy?
upward force on body that allows it to float or rise when submerged in liquid
24
What is air resistance?
force that opposes motion in air
25
What is a vector?
quantity which has both magnitude and direction
26
What is a scalar quantity?
quantity with only magnitude
