1
Chromatography
Technique that separates a complex mixture into its components based on solubility (polarity).
2
Pigment Polarity
Carotene = least polar; Xanthophyll (zeaxanthin) = more polar; Chlorophyll b = most polar.
3
Absorption Spectra
Graph showing how much light a pigment absorbs at various wavelengths; pigments together capture more of the light spectrum.
4
Photosynthesis (2nd stage)
CO₂ fixation stores energy in carbohydrates (glucose, starch). Lugol's iodine stains starch to show where photosynthesis occurs.
5
Cell Cycle
The process cells use to grow, replicate DNA, and divide into two identical daughter cells.
6
Interphase
Includes G1, S, and G2 phases; DNA exists as uncoiled chromatin.
7
G1 Phase
Cell grows and carries out normal functions.
8
S Phase
DNA replication occurs.
9
G2 Phase
Cell prepares for mitosis.
10
M Phase
Includes mitosis (nuclear division/chromosome separation) and cytokinesis (cytoplasmic division).
11
G0 Phase
Resting state for non-dividing cells (e.g., muscle, nerve cells).
12
Cell Cycle Checkpoints
G1 Checkpoint: Cell size, nutrients, DNA damage, growth factors; G2 Checkpoint: DNA replication completion; M Checkpoint: Chromosomes aligned at metaphase plate.
13
Mitosis
Division of the nucleus producing two genetically identical daughter cells.
14
PMAT
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase — main stages of mitosis.
15
Prophase
Nuclear membrane disappears; chromosomes condense; spindle forms.
16
Metaphase
Chromosomes (sister chromatids) line up at the metaphase plate.
17
Anaphase
Sister chromatids separate and move toward opposite poles.
18
Telophase
Nuclear membranes reform; spindle breaks down; chromosomes uncoil.
19
Cytokinesis
Division of the cytoplasm; forms two separate daughter cells.
20
Chromatin
Uncoiled DNA + proteins (during interphase).
21
Chromosome
Condensed DNA + proteins (during mitosis).
22
Genome
Complete set of an organism's genetic material.
23
Sister Chromatids
Identical copies of a duplicated chromosome joined at the centromere.
24
Centromere
Region where sister chromatids attach.
25
Centrosome
Microtubule-organizing center of the cell.
26
Centriole
Cylinder-shaped structure composed of microtubule triplets.
27
Ploidy (n)
Number of sets of chromosomes in a cell.
28
Diploid (2n)
Two copies of each chromosome (e.g., humans 2n = 46).
29
Haploid (n)
One copy of each chromosome (e.g., gametes, n = 23).
30
Homologous Chromosomes
Pair of chromosomes with the same genes but possibly different alleles (one from each parent).
31
Meiosis
Cell division producing four haploid gametes; genetic diversity increased.
32
Meiosis I
Separates homologous chromosomes, reducing ploidy (2n → n).
33
Meiosis II
Separates sister chromatids, similar to mitosis.
34
Mendel's First Law (Law of Segregation)
Two alleles for a trait separate during gamete formation; each gamete gets one allele.
35
Mendel's Second Law (Independent Assortment)
Alleles of unlinked genes assort independently during gamete formation.
36
Locus
Specific location of a gene on a chromosome.
37
Allele
Variant form of a gene (e.g., A vs. a).
38
Homozygous
Two identical alleles (AA or aa).
39
Heterozygous
Two different alleles (Aa).
40
Dominant vs. Recessive
Dominant allele: Expressed (A); Recessive allele: Hidden unless homozygous (a).
41
Punnett Square
Tool to predict offspring genotypes and phenotypes.
42
Dihybrid Cross
Cross tracking two traits; shows independent assortment of alleles.
43
During interphase...
DNA is uncoiled and exists as chromatin (DNA + histone proteins).
44
During mitosis...
DNA is highly coiled into chromosomes.
