1
Which microscope is better to use to see organelles?
electron microscope; has higher resolution
2
What has more surface area: a large cell or that same cell cut into cubes? Why?
the same cell cut into cubes. cutting it changes the surface area to volume ratio (it creates more surfaces)
3
plasma membrane
a phospholipid bilayer with many embedded proteins
4
Describe the structure and function of the plasma membrane
boundary between the outside and inside of cell, acts as a gatekeeper regulating the passage of molecules and ions into and out of the cell
5
What are the main types of proteins?
channel, transport, cell recognition, and receptor proteins
6
channel proteins
form a tunnel across the membrane allowing only specific molecules through
7
transport proteins
also involved with channel proteins. combine with a substance and helps it (the substance; molecules) move across (with input of energy)
8
cell recognition proteins
enable our bodies to distinguish between our own cells and other organism cells
9
receptor proteins
binds to a signal molecule that changes its shape and brings a cellular response
10
How does water mainly enter the cell?
aquaporins (channel proteins) allow the water to enter
11
cell theory
1) all life is made up of cells
2) cells come only from pre-existing cells
12
In what ways are prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells different?
prokaryotic cells are smaller and less complex. they have no nucleus or membrane bound organelles. eukaryotic cells are complex with a variety of organelles
13
How are prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells similar?
they have a plasma membrane surrounding their cytoplasm, making them individual units pertaining to life
14
What is the function of the nucleus and ribosomes?
the nucleus stores the genetic information and ribosomes use that information to make proteins
15
What are the main functions of rough ER?
they help modify and shape proteins
16
What are the main functions of smooth ER?
makes lipids and hormones
17
vacuoles
membrane-bound sacs larger than vesicles, performing different functoins depending on the cell type but tend to store water, salt, and suger. found mainly in plant cells
18
What is the main function of the Golgi apparatus?mi
acts as a transfer station, the molecules within the vesicules are modified and then sorted and packaged into new transport vesicules according to their particular destinations
19
What do lysosomes do?
typically digest molecules coming into the cell, also break down damaged organelles within the cell
20
What are the main functions of chloroplasts?
photosynthesis; turning solar energy into glucose
21
What are the main functions of mitochondria?
cellular respiration; breaking down carbohydrates to make ATP
22
What are some evidences for The Endosymbiotic Theory?
DNA sequencing and position and structure. Mitochondria, chloroplasts and nuclei of cells all contain the same DNA in the center of their cytoplasm. They are all surrounded in double membranes. This is some evidence for how they all arose from a single common ancestor (bacteria)
23
microtubules
small protein tubes which act as structural units and tracts for organelles to move on
24
Filaments and tubules make up what internal network?
cytoskeleton
25
What are cilia and flagella's similarities/
they are both external projections which enable movement and are made up of various cytoskeleton components
26
What are cilia and flagella's differences?
cilia move stiffly like an oar and are short
flagella move in an undulating snakelike fashion and are longer
27
extracellular structures
cell content found outside their plasma membranes
28
cell walls
give plants extra support and secondary cell walls give even more support and can be found in woody plants
29
What is the extracellular matrix?
a meshwork of fibrous proteins and polysaccharides in close association with the cell that made them
30
What are two important proteins found in the extracellular matrix?
collagen and elastin
