1
What are cells considered?
the fundamental units of all living organisms
2
What are tissues?
groups of similar cells that act together to perform a function
3
What are organs?
groups of distinct tissues that work together to perform a specific function
4
What are organ systems?
groups of organs that work together to perform a particular task
5
What is an organism?
the highest level of organisation in a multicellular organism made of multiple organ systems
6
What are enzymes?
biological catalysts that speed up the rate of chemical reactions
7
What are digestive enzymes?
enzymes made by specialised cells in the glands and lining of the gut
8
What are the main enzymes in digestion?
Amylase, protease, lipase and maltase
9
What does amylase break down?
Starch into maltose
10
Where is amylase produced?
small intestine, pancreas and salivary glands
11
What does protease break down?
Proteins into amino acids
12
Where is protease produced?
small intestine and stomach
13
What does maltase break down?
maltose into glucose
14
Where is maltase produced?
small intestine
15
What does lipase break down?
lipids into fatty acids and glycerol
16
Where is lipase produced?
small intestine and pancreas
17
What is the role of bile?
emulsifies fats and neutralises acid from the stomach to prevent denaturation
18
How do you test for the presence of sugars?
use Benedict’s solution- if the blue solution changes to yellow, orange or red after being heated, glucose is present
19
How do you test for starch?
use iodine solution- if the food turns blue-black, there’s starch present
20
How do you test for protein?
use biuret reagent- if the solution goes purple-pink, there’s protein present
21
How do you test for lipids?
use ethanol- if the solution becomes a cloudy emulsion, there’s fats present
22
What does metabolism mean?
total sum of reactions in your cells
23
What makes up the heart?
pulmonary artery, vena cava, leftight atrium, leftight ventricle, pulmonary vein, valves
24
How does blood get processed through our heart?
-Deoxygenated blood enters the vena cava into the atria
-The atria contract and forces deoxygenated blood into the right ventricle
- The right ventricle contracts and pumps the blood into the pulmonary artery, which carries the blood to the lungs
- The blood leaves the lungs and enters the pulmonary vein into the left atrium
- The left atrium contracts the oxygenated blood into the left ventricle, which contra ts and pumps the blood into the aorta, which travels around the body
25
What makes up our blood?
Plasma, red blood cells, platelets and white blood cells
26
How does gas exchange happen in the body?
- The lungs contains little air sacs called alveoli, which are surrounded by capillaries
- Deoxygenated blood passes by the alveoli; oxygen diffuses out of the alveoli (high concentration) into the blood (low concentration) and carbon dioxide diffuses out of the blood (high concentration) into the alveoli (low concentration) to breathed out
27
What are the properties of arteries?
- carry blood under high pressure
- thick walls with muscle fibre and elastic tissue
- small lumen
28
What are the properties of veins?
- large lumen
- have valves
- carry blood under low pressure
29
What are the properties of capillaries?
- carry blood under very low pressure
- walls are a cell thick
- substances diffuse easily across the wall
30
What are the layers of the leaf?
waxy cuticle, epidermal tissue, palisade mesophyll, xylem, phloem, spongy mesophyll, stomata
31
What do each part of the leaf do?
epidermal tissue- protects the whole plant
palisade mesophyll- where photosynthesis occurs
spongy mesophyll- allow gas diffusion
xylem- transport water and minerals ions up from the roots to the leaves
phloem- transport food substances (mainly dissolved sugars) both ways (translocation)
32
What do guard cells do?
open and close the stomata
33
What affects the rate of transpiration?
light intensity, temperature, air flow and humidity
34
What is transpiration?
the movement of water through a plant
