1
Overtones
Frequencies which are multiples of a certain frequency are called overtones of that frequency
2
*Loudness
*The loudness of a note depends on the amplitude of the sound wave. The greater the amplitude the greater the loudness
3
*Pitch
*The pitch of a note depends on the frequency of the sound wave. The higher the frequency, the higher the pitch
4
*Quality
*The quality of a musical note depends on the number of overtones present in the note and the relative strengths of the different overtones present
5
Frequency limits of audibility
The highest and lowest frequencies that can be heard by a normal human ear. The range is 20 HZ - 20,000 HZ
6
Resonance
The transfer of energy between two bodies with the same natural frequency
7
Sound Intensity
The rate of change of sound energy per unit area.
8
Threshold of Hearing
The smallest sound intensity detectable by the average human ear at a frequency of 1 kHz. Its value is 1 × 10⁻¹² W m⁻²
9
*Sound Intensity Level - Measured in?
*measured in decibels (dB)
10
The Natural Frequency
The frequency at which a body tends to vibrate if free to do so
11
Fundamental Frequency of a String
A string vibrating with an antinode at it's centre and a node at each end is vibrating at its fundamental frequency
12
Harmonics
Frequencies which are multiples of the fundamental frequency.
13
*Examples of Resonance
*• Person on a swinf being pushed every time they move away
• Barton's pendulumns (LEARN)
• Glasses shattering with high pitched notes
• Column of air in a tube resonating with a tuning fork
• Buildings in an earthquake
14
*Sound intensity and sound intensity level (correlation between them)
*When the sound intensity (in W m⁻²) doubles, sound intensity level increases by 3 dB.
15
*Harmonics in open pipe or fixed string
*All harmonics
16
*Harmonics in a pipe closed at one end
*Odd numbered harmonics only
17
*What is μ? (In Vibrations & Sound)
*mass per unit length
18
*Vibrations in closed and open pipes formulae.
*n= number of harmonic

CLOSED: (n × v) ÷ 4l

OPEN: (n × v) ÷ 2l
