1
What is the line focus principle?
• Uses an ANGLED anode face to produce a large actual focal spot AND a small effective focal spot
• Large ACTUAL focal spot: handles more heat
• Small EFFECTIVE focal spot: better spatial resolution
• Achieves both simultaneously through the angled anode geometry
2
What is the difference between actual and effective focal spot?
• ACTUAL focal spot: real physical area on the anode target where electrons strike
• Large and rectangular
• Determines heat tolerance
• EFFECTIVE focal spot: the projected area as seen from the detector (from below)
• Much smaller — appears as a square
• Determines spatial resolution of the image
3
What two focal spot sizes does a typical tube have?
• SMALL (fine) focal spot: better resolution. Used for extremities, fine detail, mammography
• LARGE (broad) focal spot: handles more heat. Used for thick parts, high mAs techniques
4
Which focal spot gives better spatial resolution and why?
• SMALL focal spot gives better resolution
• Smaller projected source = less geometric unsharpness (penumbra)
• Sharper edges and finer detail in the image
5
Explain step by step how the line focus principle works.
• Step 1: Anode face is angled (bevelled) — typically 6–20° from vertical
• Step 2: Electron beam strikes an ELONGATED RECTANGULAR AREA — the actual focal spot
• Step 3: Large actual focal spot = good heat distribution
• Step 4: Viewed from below (detector perspective), angled surface appears as SMALLER SQUARE
• Step 5: This smaller projected area = effective focal spot = determines image sharpness
• Steeper angle → smaller effective focal spot BUT greater heel effect
6
What happens to effective focal spot size and heel effect as anode angle decreases?
• Smaller angle (steeper): SMALLER effective focal spot → better resolution
• Smaller angle (steeper): MORE pronounced heel effect
• Smaller angle (steeper): SMALLER usable field size
• These are unavoidable trade-offs built into the anode design
7
Why does a small focal spot limit maximum mAs?
• Small focal spot = small, thin filament
• Small filament has limited thermal mass and surface area
• High mAs = large number of electrons concentrated on small target area
• Intense heat can exceed tolerance of the small target area
• Result: focal track melts and pits
• Large focal spot distributes heat over larger area → tolerates higher mAs
8
Why can't we use only a small focal spot for all examinations?
• High-mAs examinations (thick patient, lateral abdomen) would damage the target
• Concentrated heat at small area exceeds tungsten melting point
• Focal track permanently destroyed
• Small focal spot = good for fine detail at LOW mAs only
• Large focal spot needed for heat-demanding techniques
• Both required because clinical situations vary: detail vs heat tolerance
9
A radiographer selects small focal spot for a lateral lumbar spine. What are the consequences?
KEY POINTS:
• Lateral lumbar spine = HIGH mAs needed (thick paraspinal muscles, dense tissue)
• Small focal spot = small filament = cannot tolerate required heat
• Possible: thermal protection circuits terminate exposure early → incomplete image
• Possible: if no protection activates → focal track overheats, melts, pits permanently
• Possible: accelerated focal track pitting → reduced tube lifespan
• Correct selection: LARGE focal spot for lateral lumbar spine
