What is homeostasis?
the maintenance of a constant internal environment

What does homeostasis control in the body?
Blood glucose, body temperature and water levels

What do receptors do?
detect stimuli - changes in the environment

What do coordination centres do?
process the info received from the receptors (e.g. brain, spinal cord and pancreas)

What do effectors do?
bring about responses to restore optimum levels in the body (e.g. muscles or glands)

What gland is known as thr master gland and what does it do?
Pituitary gland- releases a varierty of hormones

What does the pancreas release and what does it do?
Insulin- helps control blood sugar levels

What does the adrenal gland release and what does it do?
adrenaline- triggers the body’s fight or flight response

What does the thyroid gland release and what does it do?
thyroxine- controls the body’s metabolic rate

What do the ovaries release and what does it do?
oestrogen- affects the menstrual cycle

the endocrine system

What organ responds to insulin?
the liver

What is produced in the testes and what is used for?
testosterone and sperm- involved in development of males

How do hormones travel around the body?
in the bloodstream

What happens when glucose levels rise?
insulin is produced

What causes Type 1 diabetes?
the pancreas reduces insulin production until it stops

What organ uses glucose during exercise?
the muscles

What does glucagon do?
triggers liver to convert glycogen back into glucose
