1
What happens to an object the higher it’s placed?
the potential energy increases
2
What happens to an object the heavier its mass is?
the GPE increases
3
How do you work out GPE?
change in height x mass x GFS (gravitational field strength)
4
What is GPE?
the energy that an object has because of its position
5
How do you work out kinetic energy?
0.5 x mass x speed*2
6
How do you work out speed?
√kinetic energy / 0.5 x mass
7
How do you work out mass?
kinetic energy / 0.5 x speed
8
How much of the energy we produce is renewable?
2/3s
9
What is the demand for energy around the UK?
34.9GW
10
What is the price of energy per mWh?
£1.33
11
What is renewable energy?
energy sources that can be replenished faster than it can be used and doesn’t emit huge amounts of carbon dioxide
12
What us non-renewable energy?
energy sources that are used up quicker than they be replenished and emits large amounts of carbon dioxide
13
What is bio-fuel?
fuel that comes from plants (cottonseed, rapeseed etc)
14
What are some sources of renewable energy and their pros and cons?
- Geothermal: converting water vapour into energy
pros: cheap, reliable and no pollution
cons: high billing costs and only specific to volcanic areas like Iceland
- Solar: converting sunlight into energy
pros: cheap, reliable and no pollution
cons: only works during the day, doesn’t produce large amounts of electricity
- Hydroelectricity: using water movement to turn turbines and generators
pros: reliable and no pollution
cons: expensive and damages habitats
15
Pros and cons of renewable sources (continued)
- Waves: using water movement and air to turn turbines and generators
pros: no pollution
cons: unreliable, noisy, little electricity produced and spoils environment
- Tidal: barrages with turbines
pros: high yield, reliable, low cost
cons: high initial cost, damages environment
Wind: wind powers turbines and turns generator
pros: cheap, no pollution
cons: weather dependent, low yield
16
What is the National Grid?
nationwide connections of generators that produce and move electricity around the country
17
What are the steps for our electricity production?
1. Power station: where electricity is produced
2. Step-up transformer: steps up voltage to 400,000V to minimise energy lost thermally
3. Pylons: carries electricity to our homes
4. Step-down transformer: reduces voltage to 230V
5. Wires: carries electricity to our homes
6. Home: electricity is used here for appliances
18
How do you work out resistance?
power / current*2
