1
describe insulators (in terms of mobile charged particles), give some examples
insulators have no mobile charges and the electrons are tightly bound to the atoms resulting in patches of excess charge. ex: rubber, plastic, wood, paper, glass)
2
describe conductors (in terms of mobile charged particles). give some examples
conductors contain charged particles that can move easily through materials (mobile charges) and excess charge is evenly spread over the surface. ex: most metals, aqueous salts
3
how might an object become charged?
charging by contact, gain/lose electrons, break bonds
4
why are neutral atoms attracted by charged particles - regardless of charge?
polarization! the electron cloud shifts causing an induced dipole
5
for conductors in equilibrium, the net electric field inside is 0, why?
the drift speed of the mobile charge is 0 (v=uE)
6
what is the electric field of a point charge eqn?
oofpez*(q/mag(r)^2)*hat(r)
7
what is the conservation of charge in words and in eqn?
if the net charge of the system changes, the surroundings has to change by the same magnitude but opposite charge (surr+sys = 0)
8
what is the superposition principle?
the net electric field at a location in space is equal to a vector sum of individual electric fields contributed by all charged particles elsewhere
9
what is the relationship between electric field and electric force (equation)?
F = qE
