1
How is sound produced?
A sound wave is produced by a mechanically vibrating source in a medium. Its energy is transferred from one point to another without a transfer of medium
2
Is a sound wave a transferse or longitudinal wave?
it is a type of longitudinal wave that travels parallel to the vibration of the medium.
3
How is sound propogated when a prong vibrates outwards?
The layers of air are pushed close together, producing compression and rise in air pressure
4
How is sound propogated when a prong vibrates inwards?
The layers of air are pulled apart, producing rarefaction and fall in air pressure.
5
What is a compression?
It is a region where air pressure is higher than the surrrounding air pressure
6
What is rarefaction?
It is a region where air pressure is lower than the surrounding air pressure
7
How many compressions and rarefactions occur for a 20Hz
20 compressions and rarefactions in 1 second
8
Can sound travel in a vacuum
No, it requires a medium to propagate
9
What is the speed of sound in air, liquid and solid
air: 300-340m/s liquid: 1500-1600m/s solid: 5000-6000m/s
10
Why does sound travel faster in more dense mediums such as solid?
Sound waves transfer energy through collisions of particles. Particles in solids are closely packled hence the rate of sound energy will be transfered faster compared to air and liquid
11
What are the 2 factors that affect the speed of sound in the air
Temperature and humidity
12
What is the formula for the speed of sound for an echo
2d/t with d = distance and t = time
