1
What ways can the brain react to sensory data
Muscle contractions and gland secrertions
2
The Central Nervous system is
The Brain and spine
3
The Periferial nervous system is
all peripheral nerves(all cranial and spinal nerves
4
Nervous system has two major parts
Central nervous system and peripheral nervous system
5
The Brain controls
The four lobes(cereberal hemispheres), thalamus, hypothalamus, brain stem, and cerebellum
6
The brain is split into cerebral hemispheres with 4 major lobes
Frontal, Parietal, Temporal, and Occipital
7
Thalamous responsible for
takes in all sensory info except smell
8
the Hypothalamous responsible for
maintaining homeostasis but also maintaining bodily tension to change behavior Ex. giving the feeling of hunger so someone eats
9
Three parts of the brain stem
The pons, Midbrain, and medulla
10
The Cerebellum controls
muscle memory/ automated muscle actions Ex. speaking, writing, walking
11
The central nervous system is mapped
by meninges
12
The peripheral nervous system is mapped
by epineurium
13
If you are experiencing pain because of a stretch it is
actually the epineurium Ex. standing toe touch
14
Nerves can be as thick as a
pinky or index finger
15
The PNS is split into
motor and sensory neurons
16
Motor neurons are
efferent aka they send signals away from the brain
17
Sensory nerves are
afferent aka they send signals to the brain
18
There are two types of motor neurons
somatic and autonomic
19
Somatic neurons innervate
skeletal muscles
20
Autonomic neurons innervate
smooth muscles, cardiac muscles and glands
21
Autonomic Neurons control the
sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system
22
The Sympathetic nervous system is
the fight or flight response ex. dilated pupils, higher heart rate, high blood pressure
23
The Parasympathetic nervous system is
responsible for rest and digestion ex. undilate pupils, lower heart rate, lower blood pressure
24
Dura mater
innervated part of the meninges
25
Sensory neuron types
Mechanoreceptive neurons
Nociceptive
Smell
Sight
Sound
Taste
Vestibular
26
Mechanoreceptive neurons two types
Muscle spindle and Golgi tendon organ
27
muscle spindle
detect muscle stretch
28
Golgi tendon organ
detect muscle tension
29
Sensation
peripheral phenomenon, raw data from sensory receptors
30
Perception
central phenomenon, conscious experience of what's happening
31
Nociceptive
detects actual or potential tissue damage
32
Mechanoreceptive neurons
touch
33
Vestibular
movement of the head
34
Vestibular nucleus takes in info from
mechanoreceptors, visual info, and vestibular apparatus/nerve to give a sense of balance
