1
What is a destructive waves?
Destructive waves are tall with a shorter wavelength, which is the distance between two waves.
2
What are constructive waves?
Constructive waves have a stronger swash which is when the waves goes up the beach.
3
What factors could create powerful waves?
The Stronger the wind is
The Longer it blows for
The Longer the fetch
The Larger the waves will be and the more energy they will have.
4
What creates a high tide and a low tide?
The high and low tide are caused by the gravitational forces between the earth and the moon, the closer the sider of the ocean is the higher the tide is.
5
What creates high pressure and low pressure?
Falling cool air creates high pressure and rising warm air creates low pressure.
6
Impacts of people living near the coast...
Rocks will erode and the houses will be damaged or flooded.
The government that pays a lot of money for protective wall will be damaged.
People lives are at danger.
Job loses.
Litter and Rubbish will be washed out to sea killing sea life.
7
Why are coastlines not straight?
Coast lines are not straight because some rocks are stronger than others and more resilient when the waves come in but the weak rocks get carried away by the waves.
8
What is erosion, deposition and transportation?
Erosion is the wearing away of the land.
Deposition is how and where the materials is laid down on the coast.
Transportation is how materials are moved.
9
Factors that could increase the speed of erosion...
Strong Winds
Seasons (Autumn and Winter will have more storms).
If they are destructive or constructive waves
10
What is hydraulic, Abrasion, Attrition, Solution action?
Hydraulic action is the hammering of the waves breaking the rocks.
Abrasion is when pebbles and sand gets flung against the rock, scraping and scouring it away.
Attrition is rock fragments and pebbles are flung against each other, wearing each other away.
Solution is the water dissolves some materials.
11
What is geology?
Study of the earth and rocks
In order what is the strongest type of rock and the weakest:
12
Clay, Chalk, Portland and Purbeck beds
Chalk, Portland and Purback beds ( because they are made with regular joints and a strong), clays (because clay is weak and easily dissolves in water).
13
How are erosional landforms created?
1.The sea begins to erode the headland when hydraulic action acts on joints/ faults to open up larger cracks.
2.The cracks grow larger by abrasion and hydraulic action, eventually forming a cave.
3.The caves gets eroded all the way through the headlands and forms an arch.
4.The arch becomes wider and the roof no longer has enough support. The arch collapses.
5.This creates a tall rock stack.
6.Over time, the stack is eroded and collapses to leave a stump.
14
What are sand bars?
Deposition joins tow headlands, creating a lagoon.
15
What is a tombolo?
Deposition joins a headland on island, creating a natural bridge.
16
Examples of Coast Defenses:
Sea Wall- Hard Engineering
Rock armour/Rip-rap- Hard Engineering
Groynes- Hard Engineering
Beach Nourishment- Soft Engineering
Dune Regeneration- Soft Engineering
Managed Retreat- Soft Enginnering
17
Formation of a Spit
1.The prevailing wind determines the direction of the longshore.
2.The longshore drift is the transportation of materials along the beach.
3.Deposition occurs when the waves have no energy.
4.The deposited material build up leading to the formation of a spit.
5.Changes in wind direction can cause a curve to form as materials is pushed inland.
6.A spit cannot cross a river estuary fully because the flow of river water keeps eroding sediment.
18
What is swash?
The movement of material up a beach.
19
What is Prevailing Wind?
Main direction of the wind.
20
What is longshore drift?
Transportation of material along the beach.
21
What is backwash?
The movement of water and materials back down the beach.
