1
Bathymetric Sensors
Equipment and technologies used to collect information about the seafloor.
2
Seafloor Mapping
Modeling the underwater surface and identifying objects or obstructions.
3
Seafloor Sensors
o Model the seafloor.
o Detect underwater obstructions and hazards to navigation.
o Ensure that a minimum navigational depth exists throughout an area.
4
Wire Drag
A method using a horizontal bottom wire pulled between two ships or boats to detect underwater obstructions.
5
Wire Drag
• Composition:
o Horizontal bottom wire of suitable length.
o Adjustable vertical supporting cables.
o Surface buoys with wooden floats.
o Weights or sinkers to keep cables vertical.
6
Wire Drag
• Arrangement:
o Floats are attached to the wire at approximately 30-meter intervals.
o Supporting cables hold the wire at the desired depth.
7
Wire Drag
• Mechanism:
o When the wire encounters an obstruction, it becomes taut and forms a V-shape.
o This indicates the presence of submerged rocks, wrecks, or other obstructions.
o The depth of the obstruction is determined by the depth of the wire.
8
Wire Drag
Faster and less laborious than using lead lines and sounding poles.
9
Wire Sweep
A modification of the wire drag method.
10
Wire Sweep
o Vertical supporting cables have fixed lengths.
o Supporting cables are positioned farther apart.
o No intermediate floats are attached to the wire.
11
Wire Sweep
Faster to put into operation than wire drag.
12
Wire Sweep
Used where few obstructions are expected and water depth is greater than the required navigational depth.
13
Sweep Bar
A rigid bar suspended at a predetermined depth to detect underwater obstructions.
14
Sweep Bar
• Composition:
o Railroad rail, structural skeletal beam, or steel pipe.
o Two vertical supporting cables.
15
Sweep Bar
• Application:
o Determines minimum clear depths.
o Used in river channels and other constricted areas.
o Locates minor underwater obstructions.
16
Side-Scan Sonar (SSS)
Equipment used to detect objects on the seafloor.
17
Processing Unit
Processes the collected data.
18
Towfish
Apparatus towed behind the survey boat that sends transmission signals.
19
Transmission Cable
Connects the towfish to the vessel's system.
20
Side-Scan Sonar (SSS)
• Mechanism:
o The towfish transmits a signal.
o The returning echo is recorded to detect seafloor objects.
21
Side-Scan Sonar (SSS)
Can model only detected objects and features; cannot determine depth.
22
Forward-Looking Sonars (FLS)
Sonar systems initially designed for navigation and obstacle/collision avoidance.
23
Transducer
Mounted at the bow of the vessel.
24
Power Module
Supplies power to the system.
25
Graphical User Interface (GUI)
Displays data in 3D.
26
Forward-Looking Sonars (FLS)
offer bathymetric and seafloor classification capabilities.
27
Forward-Looking Sonars (FLS)
• Applications:
o Primarily used for shallow-water navigation.
o Helps prevent oil spills, reef groundings, and whale strikes.
28
Remote sensing
obtains seafloor information using sensors without direct physical contact.
29
Optical Remote Sensing
Uses satellite optical sensors to obtain seafloor information by analyzing reflected sunlight.
30
Optical Remote Sensing
• Mechanism:
o Measures reflectance intensity at different wavelengths.
o Detects spectral changes to obtain seafloor information, including depth.
31
Optical Remote Sensing
Very useful for nearshore shallow waters.
32
Optical Remote Sensing
• Limitations:
o Most electromagnetic radiation (EMR) cannot penetrate deeply into water.
o Cannot penetrate clouds.
o Ineffective under heavy cloud cover.
33
Optical Remote Sensing
Requires ground truth data to verify the information obtained.
34
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)
A remote sensing technique that uses longer electromagnetic wavelengths, from centimeters to meters.
35
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)
• Mechanism:
o Transmits electromagnetic waves.
o Detects changes in wavelengths and collects echoes for processing.
36
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)
Can penetrate through clouds.
37
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)
Can capture seafloor information farther from the coast.
38
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)
Produces images that give an unfamiliar view of the area.
39
Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR)
A remote sensing technology that uses laser light instead of sound to determine bathymetry.
40
Bathymetric LiDAR
Uses two different colored lasers: green and red/infrared.
41
Green Laser
• Wavelength: 532 nm.
• Penetrates water up to approximately 70 meters.
• Reflects off the seafloor.
• Used to collect bathymetric data.
42
Red/Infrared Laser
• Reflects off the water surface.
• Used to map adjacent shore topography.
43
Sounding Rate
Number of soundings collected per second.
44
Sounding Density
Spacing or distribution of soundings over an area.
45
Swath Width
Width of the area covered by the sensor during a survey.
46
