1
what is CP
term used to describe a group of chronic conditions affecting body movement and muscle coordination. It is caused by damage to one or more specific areas of the brain, usually occurring during fetal development; before, during, or shortly after birth; or during infancy , faulty development or damage to motor areas in the brain disrupt the brain's ability to adequately control movement and posture.
2
Effects of CP
Depending on which areas of the brain have been damaged, one or more of the following may occur: muscle tightness or spasticity; involuntary movement; disturbance in gait or mobility, difficulty in swallowing and problems with speech.
3
how many people have CP
It is estimated that some 764,000 children and adults in the United States manifest one or more of the symptoms of cerebral palsy. Currently, about 8,000 babies and infants are diagnosed with the condition each year. In addition, some 1,200 - 1,500 preschool age children are recognized each year to have cerebral palsy.
4
treatment of CP?
management is a better word
helping the child achieve maxium potential in growth and development
5
Middle adulthood with CP
have to work out today to maintain stregnth and flexibility
sports used as a motivating tool to make people do excerises and stretching
3 tough mudders, 4 half marathons, various smaller races trhoughout the year
challenges now
-staying in shape, not leeting people's reaction bother me, getting the proper treatmment as soon as you think something does not feel right because having CP effects your body more than the average person
6
biomedcal factors influcing successful aging
-health and ADL
-physical function
-cognitive function
7
pyschosocial factors
psychologically well adapted
actively engaged in life
8
Gerontology
The scientific study of the biological, psychological, and
sociological phenomena associated with old age and aging
9
Geriatrics:
The branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and
treatment of diseases and problems specific to the aged
10
Biogerontology:
The study of the biology of ageing and longevity
11
trends in life expectancy
increase in life expectancy for 65 and older and 85 and older
females live longer
life expectancy decreased in 2020 because of COVID 19
12
Factors contributing to long life in Blue Zones
healthy diet, laughter, dedication to family and friends, napping, occasional fasting, water rich with Ca and Mg, daily wine
13
Changes in body composition (fat and bone) in older age
age 25: 30% muscle and 20% fat
age 75: 15% muscle and 40% fat
greater in females due to menopause
14
Physiological changes in older age
neuronal loss, cochelar degeneration, increase len rigidity, slowed reaction times, reduced lung elasticity, increased chest wall rigidity, increase V/Q mismatch, reduced max HR, dilation of aorta, reduced elasticity, reduced numberof pacing myocytes in sinoatrial node
15
Sensory changes in older age
decrease in everything
salivation, tastebuds for salty and sweet, visual acuity, response to pain, thrist sensation, smell
16
brain-related changes in older age
thinning of cerbal cortex: reduced memory and congitive function, processing speed decline, brain begins to shrink, decrease in chemical communication, hippocapmus shrinks, more morality , decline in working memory only
17
Most prevalent chronic conditions in older age
Hernia of abdominal cavity
Arthritis
Hypertension
Hearing impairments
Heart conditions
Chronic sinus problems
Visual impairments
Orthopedic impairments
Arteriosclerosis
Diabetes
Varicose veins
Hemorrhoids
Disease of urinary system
18
Explanation of compression of morbidity scenarios
cascade of functional decline as the more you get injured the more weaker you become so a minor illness can soon become dependence
19
Interventions aimed at reducing functional decline in older adults (SAVE)
S: engage in social media and calls to overcome social isolation
A: encoruage adequate nutrition and provide recommendation to emphasize protein intake to preserve muscle mass and physical function
V: incorporate outdoor time with social distancing to stimulate Vitamin D synthesis and/or implement diet supplementation
E: promote mulit-component exercise weight encourage breaking up sedntary time and activity of any duration
