In thin-walled vessels nutrients & oxygen delivered through them (where our blood is brought into capillaries)
20
What is the aorta?
Largest artery blocks the blood from the heart before sending it to capillaries
21
What is the ventricle?
Pumps blood from the heart (bottom of the heart)
22
What is the atrium?
Hold blood (oxygenated or unoxygenated) that loads in the heart (receives)
23

Is the cell that supplies nutrients to other organs (muscle)
24
What is anemia?
Condition where you don’t have enough red blood cells to carry nutrients
25
What is ABO blood type?
A is based on which antigen found on our red blood cells
26
What is a pathogen?
Is a germ that causes disease
27
What is an antigen?
Substance that your immune system recognizes as foreign (vaccines)
28
What are platelets?
Release special chemical called clotting factors, plug cuts to prevent blood loss
29
What is blood pressure?
Force of your blood pushing against the wall of your arteries as your heart pumps
30
What is hypertension?
Is “silent killer” which has high blood pressure and can for long periods lead to problems such as stroke, kidney problems, heart attack
31
What is cholesterol?
Is a important nutrient in every cell, but too much leads to problems such as clotting in the blood vessels & plaque grease
32
What is a heart attack?
Occurs when blood flow is blocked, heart
33
What is cardiac arrest?
Occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating
34
What is a neuron?
A specialized impulse-conducting cell that is the functional unit of the nervous system
35
What are hormones?
Chemical signals the body sends to communicate throughout body/marked homeostasis
36
Why do babies have more bones than adults?
Their bones have more in order to leave the womb
37
What are the 5 functions of the skeleton?
1. Provides shape/support 2. Enables you to move 3. Protects your internal organs 4. Produce blood cells 5. Stores certain materials until your body needs them
38
What are the 3 moveable joints and where can they be found?
1. Socket - shoulder 2. Hinge - elbow 3. Pivot - neck
39
Are involuntary muscles under conscious control?
No, they are not under conscious control. They are responsible for activities such as respiratory & digesting
40
What are examples of voluntary muscles?
Voluntary muscles like arms & legs ARE under conscious control
41
What are the 3 kinds of muscle and what do they do?
1. Cardiac: Repeated contraction without tiring (circulatory system) 2. Skeletal: Attached to bones (movement) voluntary 3. Smooth: Found in organs (digestive system, blood vessels)
42
What are examples of paired muscles?
Shin & calf, Bicep & triceps, Abdomen & lower back (back muscles), Quadricep & Hamstring
43
What happens when you contract your hamstrings?
When you contract your hamstrings, your quadriceps relax
44
What are the 6 functions of the skin?
1. Produce Vitamin D 2. Prevent water loss 3. Maintain body temperature 4. Protects from injury & infection 5. Eliminate waste 6. Gather info about the environment
45
What is the difference between the epidermis & the dermis of the skin?
Epidermis: Outer layer - protects the cells underneath. Dermis: Beneath the epidermis, provides support (contains nerves and vessels, sweat glands, follicles that grow hair, and oil glands)
46
What happens to your heart rate when you exercise? Why?
Your heart rate increases since your body needs oxygen. Pumps more blood and remove carbon
47
How does the duration (length of time) affect heart rate and recovery?
The duration will increase the heart rate till it’s max. Once recovery will decrease the heart rate till its set
48
What is transported by the blood?
Oxygen, nutrients, waste, immune cells, and hormones
49
What are the four components of blood?
1. Plasma (55%) 2. Red blood cells (40-45%) 3. White blood cells (~1%) 4. Platelets (~1%)
50
What are the parts of the immune system and what do they do?
1. Physical barrier: Skin protects from bacteria & pathogens 2. Innate immune system: First respond and kill bacteria (cause fever) 3. Adaptive immune system: Adapts and learns the target
51
List the organs used in the digestive system in order and their functions
Mouth: Break down food. Esophagus: Tube connected to mouth and stomach. Stomach: Break down into fluids. Small intestine: Absorb water and electrolytes. Large intestine: Most digestion/absorption. Rectum: Remove waste. Liver: Process nutrients. Gallbladder: Help digest fat (store bile). Pancreas: Break down proteins, fats, carbohydrates
52
What is pulmonary circulation?
It circulates blood from the heart to the lungs
53
How does pulmonary circulation work?
Short loop from heart to lungs back to the heart. From there, the heart will send it on systemic circulation
54
What is systemic circulation?
It circulates blood from the heart to the body
55
How does systemic circulation work?
Blood flows from heart to body parts (other organs)

57
How are airways structured in the respiratory system?
Structured in a way that allows air to travel efficiently
58
How does breathing work?
Nose/Mouth: Cavity air enters, air passes through the throat to the trachea (into lungs) then into bronchi, which is in the lungs, then finally to the alveoli where oxygen is absorbed into blood
