1Grammar (NLP)
A set of rules for constructing sentences in a language used to understand and analyze the structure of sentences in text data.
Includes identifying POS, determining the subject and predicate of a sentence and identifying the relationship between words and phrases.
2Constituents
Helps us understand the structure of sentences and ow different parts relate to each other. Some words naturally group together and act like a single unit in a sentence
3Context Free Grammar (CFG)
Ways to describe the strucuture of a language using rules. These rules specify how different parts of a language can be put together
4Goal of Constituency Grammar
To organize any sentence into its constituents using their properties.
5Why is CFG important
They form the foundation of how we formally describe the grammar of natural languages (like English) and also computer programming languages
6Grammar Rules
Describes how words or group of words can be ordered and combined
7Lexicon rules
Connects grammar categories to actual words
8Ordering
Refers to the arrangement of symbols within a sentence
9Constituency vs Ordering
1. Deals with what groups or symbols go together to form meaning full units
2. Deals with the sequence in which these units are arranged to form valid sentences
10Treebank
a collection of sentences where every sentence is broken down into its grammatical structure
11Agreement (issues with (CFG))
The phenomena where the form of one element in a sentence depends on the properties of another element, making it an issue for CFG.
12Subcategorization (CFG issue)
Certain words have rules about what kinds of other words can come after them
13Movement
Rearranging words to change the order and meaning of a sentence is difficult for CFG
14Dependency Grammar
States that words of a sentence are dependent upon other words of the sentence and are connected by directed links
15Attributes of Dependency Grammar
- There are no phrase-structure rules
- There are no phrase nodes like NP or VP
- Constituents (phrases) do not play a direct role
