1
What is Energy?
the capacity to cause change to work
2
What is Kinetic Energy?
the energy of motion
3
What are examples of kinetic energy?
1. Thermal Energy: associated with random movement of atoms
2. Light Energy: harnessed during photosynthesis
4
What is Potential Energy?
Energy that matter possesses as a result of its location or structure. It is also stored energy.
5
What are some examples of Potential Energy?
1. electrons in the electron shell and their bonds between atoms.
2 Chemical Energy: potential energy released from a chemical reaction
6
What is the First Law of Transformation?
energy can nit be created or destroyed.
Different energies can be converted to different forms of energy,
7
What is the Second Law of Transformation?
States that energy transfer or change, increases the disorder in the system called entropy,
8
What is Entropy?
the randomness of molecules in a system aka unuable energy (S)
9
What is Free Energy?
the total energy available for work in any system. aka usable energy(G)
10
What is the equation for Total Energy (H)
Usuable energy(G)+unsuable energy(S)
11
What is another name for total energy?
enthalpy (H)
12
What is Free Energy called when at at constant temperature, pressure and volume?
GIbbs Free Energy (G)
13
How to calaulcate Gibbs Energy?
change in enthalpy (H)- Abosulte Temeperatue (T)x change in entropy(S)
14
What is an exergonic reaction?
chemical reactions that releases energy typically in the form of heat or light (-)
products have lower free energy than reactants
15
What is an endergonic reaction?
chemical reactions that absorb energy (+)
productrs have higher free energy than reactants
16
Gibbs Free Energy
positive: endergonic.
negative: exergonic
17
Examples of Endergonic/Exergonic Reactions
Endergonic: photosynthesis.
Exergonic: Combustion of Methane
18
Examples of Exergonic rxns in thr body
1. cellular respiration
2. digestion of food
19
Examples of Endergonic rxns in the human body
1. Muscle contraction
2. protien synthesis
3. transport ions across cell membrane
20
Canabolism vs Anabolism
Canabolism: breakdown of molecules to release energy.
Anabolism: synthesis of molecules from simpler compounds
21
what is a metabolic pathway?
a series of reactions catalyzed by enzymes ina specific order to conver a substrate into a product.
22
What is energy coupling?
the enrgy released from a catabolic rxn is used to drive anabolic rxns.
23
What is Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)
the primary energty currency of cells. It plays a major role in energy coupling.
24
What are enzymes?
biological molecules that catalyze chemical reactions.
proteins or rRNA that perform a specific function within cells without being consumed or altered in the process.
25
Why are enzymes highly specific?
by binding to a specific substrate molecules. this binding causes a conformational change in the enzyme that brings the substrate into the correct orientation for a reaction to occur.
26
Why do enzymes lower the activation energy?
by providing analternate reaction pathway with a lower energy barrier. They form temporary bonds with substrate molecules which helps to bring reactants into the correct position/orientation for a reaction to occur.
27
Why are enzymes vital?
they allow cells to carry out the necessary chemical rxns to sustain life with using very little energy.
28
What biological priocesses do enzymes play a major role in?
dogestion, metabolism, DNA replication, cell signalling.
29
What is thermodynamics?
the study of energy tranformations in the collection of matter.
30
What increases entropy?
increase in disorganization
