1spreta latet silvis pudibundaque frondibus ora
Having been rejected, she hides in the forest and, embarrassed, covers her face with foliage
2protegit et solis ex illo vivit in antris;
and from then on lives in caves all alone;
3sed tamen haeret amor crescitque dolore repulsae:
but still her love persists and grows with the pain of rejection:
4attenuant vigiles corpus miserabile curae,
her sleepless anxiety makes her pitiable body thin,
5adducitque cutem macies, et in aera sucus
and her thinness shrinks her skin, and all the moisture of the body
6corporis omnis abit; vox tantum atque ossa supersunt:
goes off into thin air only her voice and her bones remain:
7vox manet: ossa ferunt lapidis traxisse figuram.
then only her voice remains: they say her bones took on the appearance of stone.
8inde latet silvis nulloque in monte videtur.
Ever since then she hides away in the forest and is not seen on any mountainside.
9omnibus auditur: sonus est, qui vivit in illa.
But she is heard by everyone; for her voice is all that remains of her.
