1
Explain how a pilot can perform an effective self assessment before flight.
Prior to each flight practice the "IMSAFE" checklist
Illness - am I sick?
Medication - am I taking medication that will affect my flying?
Stress - am I under a lot of stress or pressure?
Alcohol - have I drank alcohol in the last 8 hours?
Fatigue - have I gotten enough sleep?
Emotion - am I emotionally upset?
2
What is the purpose of performing a preflight inspection on the airplane?
To make sure the aircraft meets the airworthiness standards and is safe for flight
3
Who is responsible for ensuring that an aircraft is maintained in an airworthy condition?
The owner or operator of the aircraft
4
Who is responsible for determining that an aircraft is airworthy and in a condition for safe flight?
The pilot in command is responsible for determining the aircraft is in a condition for safe flight
5
For an aircraft to be considered airworthy, what two conditions must be met?
The aircraft must have the required components installed to meet its type certificate
The aircraft must be in condition for safe operation
6
Explain how a pilot determines if an aircraft conforms to its approved type design and is in a condition for safe operation.
Make sure maintenance, preventative maintenance, and alterations have been performed
7
When approaching the airplane on the ramp to begin the preflight inspection, what should a pilot be looking for?
The pilot should look at the aircrafts general appearance, looking for any visual damages or concerns such as bent wings or misaligned landing gear.
8
According to most POH/AFM documents, what is the recommended sequence when beginning the inspection of the outer wing surfaces and tail section of the airplane?
Begin at the cabin door and work in a counterclockwise direction until having gone around the entire aircraft
9
How would a pilot determine if a fuel sample obtained during the preflight inspection contained the incorrect grade of fuel or had signs of water contamination?
The pilot uses a fuel sampler to check the fuel quality for any contamination, water, or incorrect fuel grade
If contamination is found, the pilot should drain the fuel until there is no more contamination
10
Why is it important to inspect the airplane with reference to an appropriate checklist?
The checklist is a necessary tool used to accomplish a complex task thoroughly and efficiently
11
What requirements must pilots understand about placards in an aircraft?
Placards are legally required markings for operating limitations, safety instructions, or equipment functionality.
12
In addition to items specified in the POH/AFM for inspection, what are other areas of concern to a pilot when inspecting the exterior structure of the aircraft?
The pilot should inspect the critical areas of the aircraft where structural components connect to each other.
Examples: wing struts, landing gear.
Also inspect the rivet heads looking for cracks or black film meaning the rivet has worked free of its hole
13
Describe the additional inspections that may be required when conducting the preflight inspection of an airplane equipped with integrated flight deck glass panel avionics?
Make sure the flight deck reference guide is accessible, checking the pitot/static and altitude displays, check the fuel levels, and test the alarms on the avionics panel
14
Explain the different types of airplane logbooks that should be available for inspection prior to flight.
There is a set of logbooks for the aircraft that are for the airframe and engine, propeller and appliances.
These are used to record the maintenance, alterations, and inspections done on the aircraft
15
Where are the airplane logbooks located and when should they be inspected?
Airplane logbooks are not normally kept in the aircraft.
The pilot needs to inspect them prior to flight.
16
How can the use of the PAVE checklist during preflight help a pilot to assess and mitigate risk?
Pilot - illness, medication, stress, alcohol, fatigue, emotion (IMSAFE)
Aircraft - airworthiness, proficiency in aircraft, performance capability
enVironment - weather hazards, terrain, airportunways being used
External pressures - meetings, wanting to get there, family/friends
17
Do the regulations require pilots to provide a pre takeoff safety briefing to their passengers?
Yes.
PIC has to brief each person in the aircraft on how to use their seat belts and shoulder harness(if available)
18
Which persons on board an aircraft are required to use seat belts, and when is such use required?
Every person on board must wear a safety belt and shoulder harness if installed.
Must be on during taxi, takeoff, and landing
19
Explain the items that should be included in a passenger preflight briefing.
SAFETY
Seat belts - on for taxi, takeoff, and landing. Shoulder harness on for takeoff and landing
Air vents - location and operation
Fire extinguisher - location and operation
Traffic - notify when spotted another airplane in the air, limit talking when pilot is communicating on the radio
Your questions - passengers questions
20
When are flight crewmembers required to keep their seat belts and shoulder harnesses fastened?
During takeoff, landing, and en route while at their station
21
Why is the use of sterile cockpit procedures important when conducting taxi operations?
To minimize conversations and questions so the pilot can focus on important duties to be performed
22
What are examples of hazards a pilot should consider when assessing flight deck management risk?
Equipment or checklist not available
Not briefing passengers
Flying without ending an argument
23
How can a pilot mitigate hazards and reduce the risk present when managing the flight deck?
Secure all items in the aircraft
Do a passenger brief
Preprogram the airplanes avionics
24
May portable electronic devices be operated on board an aircraft?
Not when flying IFR
They will cause interference with navigation and communications
25
Are navigational databases required to be updated prior to VFR flight? What about an IFR flight?
They must be updated for an IFR flight
It is not required to be updated for a VFR flight
26
Explain what the FAA policy is for carrying current charts.
Before flying, the pilot must look at all the information for the flight.
Should always carry current charts in flight
27
Is a pilot required to have paper charts when flying, or may they use charting on a digital device such as a tablet?
An electronic flight bag can be used during the entire flight
28
What criteria must an electronic flight bag meet to be used for charting in lieu of the use of paper charts?
It cannot replace any of the aircrafts equipment.
Displays information that the paper chart would show.
Must be current, up to date, and valid.
It cannot interfere with the aircrafts equipment
29
When using an electronic flight bag for charting information, how can a pilot ensure they have current and up to date information?
Needs to be updated regularly
Make sure the data is current
Double check it is the newest and updated version
30
What are some best practices with regard to reliability and backup options for flight when using portable electronic flight bag devices?
They can fail or run out of power.
You need to have backup options: paper charts or a way to charge it.
31
With regard to cargo carried in an aircraft, what is the responsibility of the pilot?
Make sure it is properly secured.
It won't hurt passengers.
It won't damage the aircraft.
It isn't blocking emergency exits.
It is not carried above seated passengers.
32
Explain why it is important to call "clear" prior to starting an aircraft engine.
The pilot needs the ramp area clear of people, equipment, and other hazards before starting the airplane
