1
What are the 3 functions of blood?
Distribution/ transports, regulates, protects
2
What are the 2 things blood is made up of?
hematocrit & plasma (55%)
3
What are the 2 hematocrits?
erythrocytes and leukocytes
4
What are the 2 kinds of leukocytes?
granulocytes and agranulocytes
5
What is plasma?
plasma contains protein(albumin), electrolytes, globulin(antibodies), & fibroses (clotting)
6
What are some characteristics of blood?
100.4 F, 5L in body, 7.35-.45 pH, 8% of body weight
7
What is the structure and lifespan of erythrocytes?
-no nucleus, membrane contains hemoglobin for gas exchange, breaks down to bilirubin when dead /// last 120 days
8
How and where are erythrocytes made?
made in red bone marrow, from stem cells, takes 3-5 days, 4-6 mil in uL/ blood
9
What is erythropoiesis?
stim of erythropoitenin from kidney when o2 drop detected >> causing increase in RBC count
10
What are the 2 general Anemias?
microcytic and macrocytic
11
What is a microcytic anemia?
Fe(iron) deficiency >low hemoglobin> small RBC
12
What are 3 macrocytic anemias?
hemorrhagic - RBC realeased early due to trauma =enlarged RBC, pernicious - B12 deficiency > RBC fail to dive = enlarged RBC, Hemolytic - abnormal breakdown of RBC >from blood mismatch or infection
13
What are the 3 leukocytes?
eosinophils, basophils, neutrophils
14
What do neutrophils attack and stain color?
Attack bacteria and stain light blue, 3k-7k cells uL/ blood
15
What do eosonophils attack? stain color?
parasite infection, red/pink stain, 100-400 uL / blood
16
What do basophils do and stain color?
histamine production > inflammation, dark color, 20-50 uL / blood
17
What are the 2 agranulocytes?
monocytes and lymphocytes
18
What are monocytes? Agranular or granular?
phagocytes when mature, grey/ blue stain **agranulocyte
19
What are lymphocytes? Agranular or granular
antibody production, pale blue stain, 1500-3000 uL **agranular
20
What is leukopenia?
decreased WBC count, typically from drugs or ant cancer chemo
21
what is leukemia?
Canceorus WBC>Overpop of bad > reduced bone marrow function **fatal w/o bone marrow transplant
22
What is infectious mononucleosis
(Epstein Barr virus), attacks agranulocytes, symptoms = achy, low grade fever, fatigue
23
What are the 3 parts of hemostasis
vascular spasm, platelet plugformation, coagulation
24
what os erythroblastosis fetalis?
Rh- mom has child that is Rh+, after 2nd child body may begin to attack unborn fetus due to blood mismatching if no medical intervention
25
What are the universal donor/ recipient?
Donor = O-, recipient = AB+
