1
Functions of the skeletal system
Support & protection, body movement, hematopoeisis, storage of inorganic material
2
Hematopoiesis
Blood cell formation, occurs in bone marrow
3
Axial skeleton
Head, trunk
4
Appendicular skeleton
Limbs and bones that connect to limbs
5
Epiphysis
Ends of a long bone
6
Diaphysis
Shaft of a long bone
7
Articular cartilage
Hyaline cartilage, pads epiphysis
8
Periosteum
Membrane that covers bone
9
Medullary cavity
Hollow chamber in bone w/ bone marrow
10
Red Marrow
Makes Blood, in spongy bone tissue
11
Yellow Marrow
High fat content, in compact bone tissue
12
Endosteum
Interior membrane/lining of bone
13
Compact bone tissue
Dense, solid bone, wall of diaphysis
14
Spongy Bone
Porous, stores red marrow
15
Osseous Tissue/ ostesons
Bone tissue, made of collagen and sa;ts
16
Lacuna
Small chanbers which enclose osteocytes
17
Osteocytes
Mature bone cells
18
Lamellae
Rings made of osteocytes and lacunae that form around a haversian canal
19
Haversian canal
tubes that run parallel and allow blood vessels and nerves to pass through
20
Volkman Canal
Runs perpendicular to lamellae
21
Intramembranous bones
flat, skull
22
Intramembranous Ossification
Bone forms from membrane
23
Endochrondral bones
Most bones, form from endochondral ossification
24
Ossification
The process of turning into bone
25
Endochondral Ossification
Bones begin as hyaline cartilage, which slowly turns to bone. Can be either primary (happens in shaft) or secondary (happens in epiphyses).
26
Osteoblasts
Baby bone cells which forms the bone matrix/structure
27
Osteoclasts
Dissolve bone tissue to release minerals (aka resorption), happens if you don't get enough calcium.
28
Synarthrotic joint
Not moveable, fused together (skull)
29
Amphiarthrotic
Slightly moveable (vertebrae)
30
Diarthrotic
Moveable joint (knees, elbows, wrists, etc)
31
Fontanelles
Soft spots on infants' skulls
32
Gilding joint
Wrist
33
Ball and Socket
Shoulder, hip
34
Hinge
Elbow, knee
35
Pivot
Lower arm (can roate side to-side)
36
Saddle
Thumb (how you can move it back and forth)
37
Transverse Fracture
Horizontal break
38
Compound Fracture
Sticking out of body
39
Oblique
Diagonal
40
Comminuted
Shattered into pieces
41
