1Pathology
Study of disease
2Etiology
Study of the cause of a disease
3Pathogenesis
development of disease
4Infection
colonization of the body by pathogens
5disease
an abnormal state in which the body is not functionally normal
6Normal Microbiota
permantly colonize the host
7Transient Microbiota
may be present for days, weeks, or months
8Dysbiosis
microbiota imbalance associated with disease
9Microbial antagonism
competition between microbes
10Parasites
microbes that cause harm-inducing infections (ecto vs. endo)
11Pathogens
infectious organisms or agents that cause disease
12Pathogenicity
the ability of an organism or agent to overcome host defenses (depends on host genetics/physiology and pathogen virulence factors
13Virulence
describes the level of harm caused by a pathogen following infection
14What are some Virulence Factors?
Promote attachment and colonization of host tissues (invasion), facilitate pathogen spread from the initial site of infection (invasiveness), and have a toxic effect on cells/tissues/host physiology (toxins)
15Primary Pathogens
likely to cause disease after infection in a healthy host. They rapidly reproduce increase in number and have moderate to high virulence.
16Oppertunisistic Pathogens
less likely to cause disease in a healthy host, have low virulence- not sufficient to cause disease by itself
17Symptom
A change in body function that is felt by a patient (YOU) as a result of disease
18Sign
A change in a body that can be measureed or observed (BY DOC) as a result of disease
19Syndrome
a specific group of signs and symptoms that accompany a disease (COMBO)
20Stages of a Disease
Incubation period (no s/s), prodromal period (mild s/s), period of illness (most severe s/s), period of decline (s/s), period of convalescence
21When can disease spread?
Disease can spread during ALL five periods
22when is the peak of the disease?
between period of illness and disease- when most microbes/illness in body
23Acute
illness is short term because the pathogen is eliminated by the host defenses- person is usually immune to reinfection
24Chronic
Illness persists over a long time period
25Latent
Illness may recur if immunity weakens-ex is HIV
