1
Name 4 non-bilaterian Metazoans
Porifera, Cnidaria, Placozoa, Ctenophora
2
What taxonomic classification is "Placozoa"?
Phylum
3
What phylum are Sponges?
Porifera
4
Are most sponge species marine or freshwater?
Marine
5
How do adult sponges differ from larvae?
Adult sponges are sessile and larvae are free swimming
6
How do sponges get their food?
Sponges filter water into their ostium, the water goes into the spongocoel and out the oscullum.
7
Name sponge body characteristics?
Asymmetrical, Radial symmetry, Spicules, Spongin.
8
What are the 4 sponge cell types
Archaeocytes, Choanocytes, Pinacocytes, Porocytes.
9
What are Pinacocytes?
Flat cells that make up the outer and sometimes inner layers of the sponge (pinacoderm). Regulate contractions of entrance.
10
What are Archaeocytes?
Cells that move throughout the mesohyl of the sponge and transport/digest nutrients that are caught by the choanocytes.
11
What are Porocytes?
Form the ostia of some types of sponges.
12
Define Choanocytes?
Flagellated, collared cells lining canals. Create and maintain current, trap and engulf passing by substance.
13
Most sponges are what? What sponge cells become gametes?
Hermaphrodites, choanocytes and archaeocytes.
14
How do sponges reproduce sexually?
Most sponges release sperm into the water which is trapped by another sponges choanocyte and carried to the egg in their mesohyl.
15
How do sponges reproduce asexually?
budding and gemmules
16
What are gemmules?
Archaeocytes encased in spongin and spicule coat to survive harsh weather.
17
What is an Asconoid?
The asconoid takes in water through the ostia into the choanocyte lined spongocoel and then out the osculum.
18
Define syconoid and their direction in the sponge canal system...
Syconoid takes in the water through the Ostia, into the incurrent canal, then the prosopyle into the radial canal which goes out the apopyle and into the spongocoel lined with choanocyte.
19
Define leuconoid...
Ostia leads to the incurrent canals and then the flagellated chambers then the excurrent canals, oscullum.
20
What are the 4 classes of sponges?
Calcarea, Hexactinellida, Demospongiae, Homoscleromorpha.
21
Describe the class Calcarea...
Has all 3 canal systems with calcium carbonate spicules with 0, 3, 4 rays.
22
Describe the class Demospongiae...
Leuconoid canal system, 95% of living sponges. Silicon dioxide spicules without 6 rays.
23
Describe the class Homoscleromorpha
Leuconoid canal system. Silicious spicules lack the central filament.
24
Describe the class Hexactinellida...
Either syconoid or leuconoid canal system. Silicon dioxide spicules with 6 rays. Body cells all joined as one.
