1
What is ecosystem productivity?
The rate at which biomass is produced, usually measured per unit area per unit time
2
How is net primary productivity calculated from gross primary productivity?
NPP = GPP - producer respiration losses
3
A producer has a gross primary productivity of 500 units and respiration losses of 200 units. What is its net primary productivity?
300
4
What does a pyramid of numbers show?
The number of individual organisms at each trophic level
5
What does a pyramid of biomass show?
The total dry mass of organisms at each trophic level at a particular time
6
Why are samples dried before their biomass is measured?
To remove water so that differences in water content do not affect the measurement
7
What is the difference between bioaccumulation and biomagnification?
Bioaccumulation is pollutant build-up in an individual over time; biomagnification is increasing pollutant concentration at higher trophic levels
8
What are microplastics?
Plastic particles smaller than 5 mm
